Today on the substack, I decided to honor Peter Watkins' memory by writing a lengthy biography of the man and his films, arguing that his career represents an attempt to challenge our notions of what an auteur looks like. I hope you'll enjoy it. Link below!

Sometimes I regret not getting into working in media other than writing when I was a kid and felt less self-aware about and had more time for doing shoddy work on the way towards getting good at it.

OBAA is the second best BP winner of the 2020s by virtue of being interesting to think about. Oppy has it beat fs though.

Project Hail Mary is a classic “will take my dad to see this” type movie even though it’s not the type of sci fi either of us like.

@xenocryptsite The way they treat religion in the dune universe doesn’t really make sense. It’s implied to all be a cover story for a eugenics thing but the eugenicists are also kinda religious. Paul’s powers make sense if you interpret him as learning like, Super-Calculus, which is p silly

@LegoKingo Yeah for this reason I find it hard to get into "Dune", it seems to me less interestingly ambiguous than completely incomprehensible. "Prophecy is a lie but also Paul is in fact the Messiah." What?

I think the question of Dune’s orientalism/its relationship to the idea of a historical Great Man is a little complicated and muddled. Herbert often wavers between seeing Paul as evil and seeing him/his children as tragic heroes.

@Knock1onheaven2 I think part of it is that PTA definitely has a lib view abt violence, and I imagine it some of it was him hedging his bets too to avoid freaking WB out by having them wage war on ICE (though really it was pointless to hedge bc conservatives all interpreted it that way anyways)

@LegoKingo Yes they don’t actually actually kill anyone aside from Willa at the end which you could view as honest or a sign of PTA’s libness

@Knock1onheaven2 True but even then I feel like they avoid outright killing ice agents (or perhaps they do it offscreen and I just missed the implication). To my memory the only time we see someone kill a white supremacist are the bounty hunter and Willa at the very end (though Bob def tries)

@LegoKingo Non military people tbc. They’re fine with holding ICE at gunpoint. Perfidia with the security guard is interesting in that it’s the one moment where PTA could explicitly be condemning violence from the left

Occasionally I’ll tap on a random part of the app and a huge pop up will appear asking me to log in to my account. Before I can press anything it vanishes. The backend of this sight is a beautiful mystery.

Deep down I’m kind of rooting for them to get this one right but I know they don’t have it in them. It seems really difficult to resolve the dangling plot/thematic threads of the last one without retconning some of the clunkier stuff

Phil Lord and Chris Miller say they’re developing “extraordinary” new ways to animate Spot in ‘BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE’. “It’s going to take you to places of abstraction that I think are going to be really special.” (Source: @Variety)

@MetaReflexive I read it because I was bored, and admittedly it is funny to read it and see just how neurotic the author is. There’s a whole section of it that’s just him talking about fumbling an autistic gf who likes anime

The most interesting question to ask is whether these criticisms apply to Lynch’s film, which off the dome strikes me as more invested in Dune as an allegory for self-mastery. Also: does the film’s clear TM influence complicate or worsen the charge of orientalism? Open question.

Villeneuve’s take is similarly muddled though for structural reasons rather than personal ones (they are pretty impersonal movies). Both dune movies so far have ended on the implication that the next one is going to tie everything together into a coherent critique/statment.

@flowzr91 Yeah, jokes aside this is the actual way Herbert derived the term. In the early drafts of the story he just straight up called them the Free Men of Arrakis. I believe the in-universe etymology of it is the same as well.

@LegoKingo I always figured it's meant to be like "free men", as in the native people not beholden to whatever house is running the spice mining operation at the moment

I keep getting this ad for a healthcare-worker centric comedy show in my area where a guy says “[Redacted], Connecticut, where healthcare workers see their patients and then see them again at stop and shop” and I guess I didn’t realize that was a regional quirk

The shots in the BND trailer where they recreate comic covers in slow motion feel like they’d be kind of annoying in the movie itself and screw up the pacing of the action scenes. I’m hoping it’s just a thing for the trailers.
