and even though it mostly talked about chickens and she’s a goose girl, she loved it.

The geese run around, chewing her out for being gone. She just sweet-talks them and strokes their necks.

She calls them rainbow gumdrops and swears she can tell the flavors apart, although they all taste exactly the same.

I brought our victor up with Lenore Dove a few times, but she never wanted to discuss her.

“You can’t count on things happening tomorrow just because they happened in the past. It’s faulty logic.”

Lenore Dove stroked its plumage with her fingertip. “Poor baby . . . poor little bird . . . who will sing your songs now?”

Dove color: Warm gray with a slight purplish or pinkish tint. Her color. Her bird. Her name.

Sometimes she cries because things are so beautiful and we keep messing them up. Because the world doesn’t have to be so terrifying. That’s on people, not the world.

A few of the geese hiss to announce my arrival. Lenore Dove’s was the first face they saw when they hatched, and they don’t love anyone but her.

Porcupines inhabit the hills around 12. Lenore Dove has an affection for the ones back home — quill pigs she calls them — saying they’re misunderstood.

Lenore Dove said most everybody loves breathing, too, and where did that get us? Some loves don’t signify.
