I have now finished recruiting to this study. Thank you to everyone who shared my participant call over the past year. I have closed my squarespace site, so the best way to contact me is via DMs. Initial findings coming (hopefully) soon at an academic conference near you.

@J_K_Wood Divorce would have protected me sooner. I am so deeply grateful that my mother chose it when she finally did, despite initial lack of support from her church community. You cannot distill things into binary categories—divorce is painful, yes. Abuse is worse.

Divorce is the choice we’ve been told not to question. That must end. A massive new study tracked over 1 million children across 50 years. The results are devastating. If you’re a parent or policymaker, you need to see what divorce really does to kids: 🧵

You can change your mind about taking part at any point and if you reach out for info or to ask a q, I won’t assume you’re taking part. I’m hoping to get all the interviews done before school holidays. #phdlife #interviewresearch #churchtoo

It’s been almost one year since my first interview with a #woman #spiritualabuse #survivor from an independent #evangelical church in the #UK. If you’ve been been thinking about taking part, please contact me to express interest before the end of May, when recruitment will end.

I finished reading Wolf Hall for the first time and am completely in awe of Hilary Mantel. I’m now listening to her series of Reith Lectures and they are masterpieces. I have a feeling I’ll be listening to ‘Can these bones live?’ again and again while writing my thesis.

Curious whether anyone has done theological work on masculinity that’s focussed on Jacob and Esau. Isn’t it interesting, when certain forms of Christianity advocate toxic masculinity, Jacob and Esau indicate a different pathway in terms of who is favoured?

I followed Rowena Murray’s advice to draft an outline at the midpoint and not wait until I’m “ready” to write. I was surprised how quickly the words tumbled out of me. I highly recommend her book How To Write a Thesis. It’s been a faithful, reassuring companion.

I can’t quite believe that it’s been just over a year since I got ethical approval for my project. I remember the feeling of fear and uncertainty - could I actually do it? A year on, I’ve completed 26 interviews with women survivors from UK indpt evangelical churches.
