@cordes_tax I've had too many problems this year and last year. I will file separate extensions from now on. A little extra work prevents 7 4 hour phone calls. Letters, etc...

Tax Pros: Given the reduced workforce and other issues with the IRS, would you consider filing a separate extension for each spouse in the future when you are not absolutely certain they will file MFJ?

@LizMpersonal I got stuck on a call w the Phillipines & they would not transfer me to the retention department. I told them I didn't want to be unpleasant. I deal with crap every day too. I explained the married but not for tax purposes hoh rules. Magically...transferred

If you need to get some frustrations out, scream at your friend about HOH rules.

She said due to recent uptick in extension filers not actually filing a return...everyone's getting a letter. Yay! Cuz i have time to explain this...

@#$#$@ All spring I clients who live in Florida and had extensions until May 1 due to Hurricane Milton were getting notices. Now they're getting notices saying "We haven't received your 2024 Form 1040 federal income tax return", which makes them think that they are "in trouble"

@adammarkowitzEA @mountainwesttax Had this happen. It was an actual check from the title company. I gave them a voucher to give to the title company to make sure it got credited to the correct account. Went through fine.

@mountainwesttax But how was it actually paid? With a check? Or is there some payment system they're able to tap into to make the payment directly to the IRS at the closing table?

Anybody ever seen a real estate transaction where IRS debt is paid off at the closing table? Have a client getting a HELOC who is getting the advice that she can pay the IRS for her 2024 balance due at closing. How does that even work? #TaxTwitter

@mountainwesttax @AccountingAsArt Pps says x number of extensions don't turn into completed returns, so they're going to send automated letters reminding people to file. Shoot me. I keep thinking about the lost hours of phone calls, reassuring people that extensions are ok and they're not being audited....
