It’s not too hard, but let’s spell it out! Science is a satisfactory philosophy of ignorance. One starts in a position of not knowing and being comfortable and indeed delighted and excited in not knowing. One then starts to investigate - do experiments or observe Nature. The key is not to get into an entrenched position and instead to allow your knowledge to develop as new data and understanding emerge. If you truly don’t have the data or understanding to come to an informed view, then the advice is not to guess and loudly proclaim your guess to the world but to shut up and do some work. A little northern in phrasing perhaps, but I am from Oldham.

This is my default position and I think it’s a useful assumption - because even if there is a slim chance it’s true (and we may well never know) then it should focus our collective minds on the task in hand - which is to avoid fucking it up.

The scariest answer to the Fermi Paradox is that there are no aliens at all. They we are the only tiny candle of consciousness in an abyss of darkness.

Astronomy is incredibly international, from what I recall 50% of papers have multinational teams. This policy (and for that matter the ongoing delay to Horizon) further diminishes our global participation and certainly our reputation.

Increases to visa costs will make it more expensive for skilled workers to obtain visas to come and live and work in the UK. “…with such huge costs, the world’s brightest and best scientists will go elsewhere and everyone in the UK will lose out.” thetimes.co.uk/article/times-…

The PM really does need to understand that he is now further damaging U.K. science by not immediately rejoining Horizon, presumably to placate some know-nothing fringe bloviators who know nothing about science, its value or how it’s conducted. As Lord Rees says below, it is baffling. Get on with it.

🔥 *New Zealand* has just joined Horizon Europe, yet we are still out - that's nuts. Sunak needs to sort this out asap. Horizon Europe is now THE global multinational science platform... and the UK used to lead it. Without it we're just not leading big science collaborations.

'If science, like art, is to perform its mission truly and fully, its achievements must enter not only superficially, but with their inner meaning, into the consciousness of people.' -Albert Einstein (Speech at opening of 1939 World's Fair) Video here: vimeo.com/28281530
