@DTWillingham When working with educators using a backwards design approach, I differentiate knowing as facts/info (ie the equation for photosynthesis), whereas understanding is the big ideas that are built upon that knowledge (ie without photosynthesis there would be no life on this planet)

Does anyone know of a useful description of the difference between "knowing" and "understanding?" When people use the terms, I think they generally are appealing to our intuitions. Is there something principled?
