Halloween, 1986. Preschool. While the other girls were princesses and fairies, I was a robot. My dad built this costume from scratch and even wired it so it lit up. Looking back, this photo makes me smile because it captures something that was true about me from the very beginning. I was never interested in fitting into the mold of what people expected girls to be. I wasn’t “one of the girls” in the conventional sense - I was a tomboy, happiest doing my own thing. That never meant I wasn’t a girl. It just meant I was my own kind of girl. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to understand where I fit. Today, I look at this little kid in the robot costume and realize she didn’t need fixing. She just needed the freedom to be herself.

Honestly it just makes me mad because there’s so many hobbies and pursuits I’d want to take on but i barely have enough time for my current ones. Meanwhile this person is squandering their time on…this. Such a waste of resources including oxygen.
