@EricLevitz Yes, but the environmental burdens are borne by everyone, no? There's a contradiction in vigorously passing and enforcing domestic environmental laws only to outsource production to countries that aren't burdened by those laws.

It is an immense privilege to have someone else bear the environmental burdens/local externalities of providing you with minerals and low-value manufactured goods. Raises security concerns for sure. But China isn't "ripping us off" by selling us with cheap rare earths

@JHWeissmann @jeffhauser Fair on Taiwan and Bulgaria, but I do think the inflation thesis would aided by addressing elections in 2023. Isn't it a fair point that they shouldn't be ignored?

@IDoTheThinking Right. The first part of the quote is wrong. Biden admin had very clear and impactful leg wins, probably more so than any admin in recent history. Some of those wins were *specifically targeted* at the portion of the electorate that they lost in 2020. It just didn't matter.

This is so funny to me. First, the complete assurance that he must know more than everyone else, even people who do this for a living And then he proceeds to give a bunch of facts that don't seem to even remotely support his conclusion (Harris is 99% to win NV)
Swann Marcus@SwannMarcus89

@PoliticalKiwi You have no idea what you're talking about. The GOP cumulative number is also down, plus 36% of mail ballots came after early in person was over in 2022. Furthermore, autoregistration means tons of 18-29 year old Dem voters were registered as nonpartisan by default Read theory

@DrewSav You don't think the demographics of mail vs. in-person played a role? In the Baltimore City race Scott lost early mail but also dominated in-person. There wasn't a late shift in that race -- I assumed it was because in-person skewed younger than early mail?

People who made up their minds when Trone was dominating the airwaves voted for Trone. But the push by Team Alsobrooks leading up to e-day swamped him as voters broke for her decisively.

Lots of mails in to be counted and seven precincts haven't reported e-day votes but here's how the method breakdown for the Democratic primary in Maryland. Mail-ins (or at least what's been counted) preferred Trone. He got swamped on e-day though, with late deciders.

wow i wonder why insurance companies want doctors to be vaccinate their patients
Carole Mac@HerbsandDirt

⚠️THIS IS WHY YOUR DOCTOR GETS AGGRESSIVE. “Blue Cross Blue Shield pays your doctor a $40,000 bonus for fully vaccinating 100 patients under the age of 2. If your doctor manages to fully vaccinate 200 patients, it jumps to $80,000. But here’s the catch: Under BCBS’s rules, pediatricians LOSE THE WHOLE BONUS unless at least 63% of patients are fully vaccinated. This includes the flu vaccine. So it’s not just $400 on your child’s head -it could be the whole bonus.” (Credit: @shadyavefarm ) Those aggressive well-baby visits make a little more sense now don’t they? The absolutes; with zero informed consent. And this is why they “fire” you from their practice. It messed up their numbers if you decline. Check this out before it’s scrubbed too. 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 whale.to/c/2016-BCN-BCB…

Remember that this is going on on GW’s property. An embarrassing chapter for GW.
Stu Smith@thestustustudio

At the George Washington University Gaza Solidarity Encampment today, the protesters held a "People's Tribunal" where they put President Ellen Granberg, Provost Christopher Bracey, the Board of Trustees, @GWPolice, and many others on trial. Is it normal for students to want to hang their provost and chop the heads off of the Board of Trustees? "Guillotine, Guillotine, Guillotine, Guillotine" "Bracey, Bracey, we see you. You assault students too. Off to the motherfucking gallows with you." "As you already know where I am sending her [to the guillotine], her and her fuckass bob." When will @GWtweets finally do something? If the students hurt any of these people in any way, the university will be completely at fault.

@dieworkwear Early retirement forums certainly went this way. Used to be ordered around a group of hardcore, anti-consumer obsessives who re-used their paper towels and saved 70% of their income. It's now a more generalized self-help world that's far more boring.

In the mid- to late-2000s, I found that a lot of menswear discourse happened on forums, where you had people who were just coming online and finding camaraderie with fellow nerds. These people, who were just finding online communities, drew their knowledge from diverse source materials, such as books and years of conversations with tailors. Now, a lot of menswear discourse is shaped by the same online source materials, such as pods, blogs, Twitter, Instagram, and the general Online Discourse. This makes opinions within the community very predictable, and the discourse a bit boring. If you are Very Online, you've seen it all. The breakdown of forums, and their replacement by a wide variety of other places to spend online, means that each walled garden only has a couple of hardcore nerds. So while the mid-2000s may have had 20 Super Nerds on one forum, now there are only a couple of nerds in each small community, making the discourse in those places less vibrant. For people with other hobbies and who have spent a lot of time online, I'm curious if you've seen a similar trajectory in online discourse within your hobby.

Here's your annual reminder that the state of the union address and subsequent response have zero political impact whatsoever. The state of the union is a pointless tradition long past its expiration date.

How do I know Trafalgar is fake? I heard @RobertCahaly go on a podcast over the summer where he claimed that 1 or more of the Washington, Colorado, New Hampshire, and VERMONT senate races would go Republican. He then released a poll showing Vermont within 7. The Dem won by 40.

@Noahpinion If you want to argue that folks overlook that the US trend line per capita is great and China's is most definitely not . . . . that makes some sense. But the whole *people are ignoring China!* framing doesn't make sense.

@Noahpinion Is there really a significant group of people out there who are entirely ignoring China's emissions? People point out that their per capita is lower than the US, but I don't people pretending China's emissions just don't exist. Not sure who you're arguing with.

A lot of people who yell about planetary survival suddenly switch to talking about per capita emissions and moral obligations and blah blah blah the second anyone mentions China.
Dean Baker@DeanBaker13

@Noahpinion Ummm, I'm not sure what your point is. Are we supposed to be upset that 1.4 billion people emit more carbon than 330 million people in the United States? Do we have white people's privilege that gives us an inherent right to do more damage to the environment?

Will give 4-1 odds to anyone reputable that the US will be shown to have either direct or strongly indirect involvement in the Nordstream attack, by an end date of your choosing. We'll have to figure out some mutually agreed upon definition of "shown to have." Feel free to DM.

@cobra0483 @rasmansa @JeffreyASachs As I acknowledged, I didn't recognize the initial Tweet as a troll, and I quickly added a second tweet adding that context while also standing behind the literal words I wrote, which still turned out to be right, as I think you'll see if you reread them.

1) The dancers and style of dance in the video look great and worth celebrating. 2) The notion that "graceful, flowing movements" are white, let alone "white supremacist," is nonsense racial essentialism that people who want to end racism should stop indulging.
Dr. Ricardo Duchesne@dr_duchesne

Blacks create a truly "inclusive" ballet without "white supremacist" notions of "graceful, flowing movements, balance and symmetry, elaborate sets and costumes" ----- for a more "soulful", "jumpy", "bouncy" African ballet.
