The US now wants to completely ban all Chinese cars from their roads with rules that "prohibit car manufacturers from selling cars in the US with important components or software from China".
Funny how all the beautiful talk about "free markets" disappears once actual competition appears...
It's also interesting to see how different it is from the China's own approach. The Chinese car industry didn't become so strong by banning foreign car brands, quite the contrary in fact: it welcomed them with open arms, with for instance Tesla now producing more than half its cars globally in its Shanghai gigafactory. Only if you actually compete with the best can you learn from this and become the best yourself...
This effectively is the US admitting it is too weak to compete and retreating by shielding itself with protectionist rules under the guise of "national security". But paradoxically this will undoubtedly make it even weaker as firms that are protected will have even less incentives to be competitive.
As a result we arrive at the rather strange situation where "communist China" has much freer markets than the "capitalist U.S." 🤔

This is genuinely huge: for the first time since the industrial revolution 200 years ago, it looks like 2024 may be the year when global emissions will start a long-term structural decline.
And, as the article details, it's in large part thanks to China, because it's driven by:
- The rise of solar power and wind, made extremely cheap by China: "Over the past decade, we've seen over a 90% reduction in the cost of buying solar modules", with China providing "around 90 per cent of the world's solar components." Same for wind: "onshore wind has dropped from being 95% more expensive in 2010 than the cheapest fossil fuel option to being 52% lower in 2022" (en-former.com/en/renewable-e…), with China producing about two-thirds of the world's wind turbines (reuters.com/business/energ…). This leads to a situation today where "for over three-quarters of the world's population, they now live in a country where it's cheaper to build new wind and solar generation than any other form of new carbon-intensive electricity supply, that is coal and gas".
- China's mass adoption of EVs: we're now at a stage where "over half of the electric cars on the planet are driving around on Chinese roads".
Now of course, peaking isn't enough, as the graph 👇 shows what will matter now is the pace of the decline in emissions towards a "net zero" future. If we manage to reach net zero in 2050, we will keep global warming below 1.75C but on current trends (which is a steady, but not rapid, decline from now on) the planet will still warm by 2.6 degrees.

So here we have the Israeli Minister of National Security blatantly declaring “yes, we treat prisoners barbarically by design, and to solve prison overcrowding, we'll start mass executions.”
He's essentially shouting on social media, "We're turning our concentration camps into death camps, and we're damn proud of it."
The level of impunity is mind-blowing, and 100% thanks to American backing (together with some other Western states playing along).
The world needs to face reality: a terrifying ideology is slowly setting down on the West. Actions and ideology are always tied at the hip - you can't have one without the other. If you're doing something or supporting someone doing something, you need some rationalization to back it up.
And sadly I think it’s just getting started. until now we - in the West - had been told that everything about such actions was anathema to everything we stood for. And even though we very often - even routinely - acted in barbaric ways it was always hidden, unassumed and denied in order to keep ideology intact. This time is different, there’s nothing hidden, unassumed and denied about it: the Israelis are proudly revendicating their actions, as this tweet by Ben Gvir illustrates. Yet we still support them. Which invariably means that our ideology needs to evolve to rationalize this, and we’re seeing signs of this everywhere in the West: a disinhibition of a discourse that justifies this. Worse still, a discourse that virulently opposes condemning this, as it’s “antisemitic” to do so.
Here's the real danger: once this discourse becomes normal, even mainstream, it opens the floodgates. And you find yourself with a West that's lost its mind even far more than it already has, drunk on a deadly ideology that allows it to commit the worst atrocities with pride and confidence. It's not like we haven't been down this road before - this barbarism is in our DNA, whether we like it or not.
Which is why it's so important to call this stuff out, loudly and constantly. We can't let this become the new normal, we can’t become the worst version of ourselves. We can’t let the future become even darker than our past.

הגיע הזמן לפרק את הספינים, ולענות למבול התדרוכים וההאשמות השקריות של השב"כ ודובריו בתקשורת. מאז שנכנסתי לתפקידי כשר לביטחון לאומי, אחת המטרות העליונות שהצבתי לעצמי היא הרעת תנאי המחבלים בבתי הסוהר, וצמצום זכויותיהם למינימום המתחייב על פי חוק. כך התחייבתי לבוחריי ולעם ישראל עוד בבחירות, כאשר הודעתי שאדרוש את התפקיד. כל מה שפורסם אודות התנאים המפליגים של הרוצחים השפלים הללו בכלא, היה נכון. הם שלטו בבתי הכלא ללא עוררין, ועשו ככל העולה על רוחם. בשנה האחרונה, בטרם פרצה המלחמה, ניהלתי מלחמת חורמה כדי לבצע את הרפורמה המיוחלת בתנאיהם, ולממש את המנדט שקיבלתי מהציבור. הארגון המרכזי שנאבק בניסיונות שלי להוביל את הרפורמה החשובה הזו, ואף הצליח למנוע אותה, הוא השב"כ, בפיקודו של רונן בר. הוא נעמד על רגליו האחוריות, ושכנע פעם אחר פעם את ראש הממשלה שהרעת תנאי המחבלים תוביל להסלמה, לפיצוץ, להבערת המזרח התיכון. מה לא. בשבעה באוקטובר גילינו את האמת המרה: אויבינו אינם זקוקים לאף תירוץ כדי לבצע בנו טבח, ולהוביל ל"הסלמה". יש להם סיבה אחת שבגללה הם עושים זאת: הקיום שלנו כיהודים. לצד זאת, לאחר פרוץ המלחמה, הצלחתי לבצע סוף כל סוף את הרפורמה המיוחלת. תנאי המחבלים בכלא צומצמו למינימום: עצרנו את ההפקדות הכספיות, ביטלנו למחבלים את הקנטינות, הוצאנו את מכשירי החשמל מהתאים, הפסקנו את טיילת המחבלים, צמצמנו באופן דרמטי את שהות המחבלים במקלחות, ביטלנו את מעמד הדובר, הפסקנו את תפריט האוכל המפנק שהומר בתפריט מינימלי, ובקיצור - הפסקנו לחלוטין את תנאי הקייטנה. מחבלים המשוחררים כיום ממאסר מעידים על כך שלא ירצו לשוב לכלא הישראלי לעולם. בתי הכלא של מדינת ישראל הם כבר לא בדיחה עצובה. כחלק מהמלחמה, הצבא ביצע מעצרים רבים של מחבלים ומבוקשים בטרור באיו"ש, לצד מחבלים רבים שהובאו מעזה. חלק גדול מהעצורים שוכנו במחנה צבאי, שדה תימן, שם הוחזקו בידי הצבא. לאחרונה, בעקבות עתירה לבג"ץ, המלינה על תנאי המחבלים שם, בצה"ל ובשב"כ מיהרו להתקפל, ולהודיע כי ייבחנו תנאי הכליאה במקום, וכי מספר האסירים המוחזקים במקום יצומצם. בפועל נוצר מצב בו בגלל תנאי המחיה הקשים של האסירים (אנחנו מדברים על מחבלים מתועבים, כן?), ישנם כעת 1,500 מקומות כליאה פנויים בשדה תימן. גם בבתי הכלא המצויים תחת אחריות שב"ס, בהם נקלטו מחבלים רבים, נוצרה צפיפות. אך מעולם לא העליתי בדעתי לשחרר מחבלים מהכלא כי צפוף להם. וזוהי ליבת המחלוקת ביני לבין ראש השב"כ רונן בר: רונן בר טוען שתנאי המחבלים בכלא, בהם הצפיפות, נראים רע בעולם, ועלולים להוביל להסלמה. ואני טוען, שאם לכל מדינה אחרת בעולם היו עושים מה שנעשה לנו, היא היתה עושה פי כמה וכמה מול אותם מחבלים – ושמה פס אחד גדול על כל המצקצקים בלשונם. צפוף להם? פעם הבאה שיחשבו פעמיים לפני שהם יוצאים לשחוט, לאנוס ולבזוז. ובאשר לטענות של שב"כ לפיהן שב"ס והמשרד לביטחון לאומי לא עשו דבר בכדי להקים ולהוסיף מקומות כליאה חדשים – מדובר בהבלים, שזכו לשפרור מלא מצד תקשורת השמאל. אלו העובדות המדויקות: שב"ס החל כבר בפרויקט בינוי מואץ של מקומות כליאה חדשים, ומאז אוקטובר נוספו 2,500 מקומות כליאה חדשים. פרויקט נוסף החל בחודש אפריל האחרון, והוא כולל בניית 936 מקומות כליאה נוספים המתבצעת כעת, כאשר בנוסף לבינוי החירום במלחמה, שב"ס ישלים עד סוף השנה פרויקט בינוי של כ-1,200 מקומות כליאה ברחבי הארץ. כל זה, לצד העובדה שמאז תחילת המלחמה קלט שב"ס מספר שיא של למעלה מ-5,000 מחבלים שנעצרו בידי כוחות הביטחון. ייתכן מאוד שגם אחרי שתושלם הוספת מקומות הכליאה החדשים, למחבלים הרבים יהיה עדיין צפוף בכלא. אני כבר הצעתי פתרון הרבה יותר פשוט, של חקיקת עונש מוות למחבלים, שתפתור את סוגיית הצפיפות – חקיקה שגם אליה השב"כ מתנגד בתוקף. אבל עד שהחקיקה הזו בעזרת השם תעבור, לא יקרה כלום אם למחבל נו'חבה, שבשבעה באוקטובר שרף תינוקת, יהיה צפוף בתא המאסר בו הוא נמק. שתפו.
