Early this year, I started gaining a lot of traction from immigration content and naturally, it became my niche for a while. But I eventually stepped away from it because it became incredibly toxic. People started digging into my LinkedIn to “evaluate” my life. Some Canadians came into my mentions saying I got into Canada through “cheap degrees” and all sorts of vile comments. That was my cue to pivot. Immigration is one of the most emotionally charged topics on this app because people’s real lives are attached to it. People are angry. Some feel displaced in their own country, some feel the government failed them, Some immigrants themselves feel betrayed because the rules changed halfway through their journey. So discussions around immigration quickly stoped being logical and become deeply personal. What many people also fail to realize is that Nigerians are not the only ones posting immigration content, Indians, Mexicans, and immigrants from Francophone African countries post even more. The difference is that language barriers and the algorithm limit how viral those conversations go. That’s why I think it’s intellectually lazy to reduce everything to “Nigerians are the problem.” In as much as moderation and responsibility matter, immigration itself is a very delicate niche. No matter how balanced your take is, someone somewhere will still see you as the villain.

Part of the reason I stopped talking about migration and immigration on this space is because a lot of people approach the topic with too much emotion, sentiment, and entitlement instead of realism. I honestly don’t know who sold us the idea that once you enter a country on a student visa or a foreign worker permit, citizenship is automatically guaranteed. That’s not how migration works. Migration is a gamble. There’s a possibility of opportunity, yes. There’s a pathway, maybe. But pathways can change overnight. Governments change, policies change, economies change, and suddenly you’re back to square one. No country owes anyone citizenship simply because they studied there, worked there, or paid taxes. Paying taxes is part of living and working in that system; it’s not a guaranteed contract for permanent residency or citizenship. People need to approach migration with more practicality and less entitlement. Have backup plans. Understand the risks. Nothing is promised.

A friend of mine in Montreal bought a new iPhone and a new suit, went to Alberta to meet a girl for the first time on a date, came back a few days later, returned the iPhone and suit, and got refunded.
