The Tunde Onakoya story is one of manufactured hate. All he does is bring succour to vulnerable children and give them a reason to dream. His life’s work is, in essence, an exercise in humanising children whom society had condemned to hopelessness, and in making them seen. His admirers cut across ethnic, religious, and political lines, yet we all know the camp now invested in demonising him. He has done nothing wrong except refuse to become an instrument of political propaganda. Instead, he chose to pursue every legitimate and respectable avenue necessary to protect the children to whom he has sold the dream of becoming chess champions, of going to school, and of rising above the slums. That includes honouring the invitation of his own government, a government that is meant to serve him. This is why one must never move with a mob, even where interests appear to align. Not that Tunde did. His only offence, if any, is excelling at what he does while refusing to become a partisan tool for the agenda of those now hounding him, those bitter that he carries the Nigerian flag with pride wherever he goes. And I only hope that you know, @Tunde_OD, that we love you for all you do, and that your supporters far outnumber these crickets rooting for your fall.
