this week i posted about liftgates, dump truck bids, batch ordering, OEM incentives, and the real cost of bad specs. every one of those came from a real conversation with a real fleet manager. if you're buying work trucks and nobody's asking you what the truck is actually doing, you're talking to the wrong person.

municipalities love to talk sustainability goals. but here's what actually moves the needle on fleet emissions: right-sizing. stop buying trucks bigger than the job. a properly spec'd class 5 does the work of the class 7 you didn't need. less fuel. less wear. lower cost. sustainability isn't always about going electric. sometimes it's about going smarter.

@fleetowner telematics is only as good as the person reading the data. i've seen fleets spend six figures on connected platforms and still miss basic maintenance intervals because nobody owns the dashboard. the tech works. the implementation is where most fleets fall short.

@RobertC37212732 this is exactly why i tell fleet buyers to spec conservatively on first-year models. let someone else beta test the new powertrain. a proven platform with a known service history saves you more than any rebate ever will.

Older ones are better. Got 3 GMC 2500 work trucks 2026 models all in the shop, 2 with motors out, one with transmission out. Have 2025 High county model personal truck I hit deer with it and it’s in the shop for 2 months. All them new truck not a one I can drive. Not what they used to be that’s for damn sure…

city went to bid on a ram 5500 dump truck. picked the quote $2,400 cheaper. truck showed up with the wrong hoist, no tarp, bed didn't match the spec sheet. "saving money" cost them 6 weeks and a change order that wiped out the savings. cheapest bid ≠ best bid. every time.

customer gave us a PO for a truck and upfit. first time buying from this OEM. no idea what a fleet identification number was. we walked them through it. they signed digitally. then the OEM flagged an inactive FIN. called the OEM. walked the customer through activating it. problem solved before it became one. guess who they're calling for the next truck.

the worst fleet decision i see repeated every year: spec'ing trucks individually instead of as a fleet. one truck at a time means one price at a time. batch your orders. standardize where you can. your mechanics will thank you and your budget will too.

school district needed a service truck with a liftgate on a tight budget. most dealers would've cut the spec. we found the right liftgate and truck for the application. saved them $3,800 without losing anything they actually needed. don't cut the truck. find the right one.

the real test for any EV in the commercial space isn't the test drive. it's day 200 when a municipality needs it to run a route with a service body and liftgate in January. matching the feel of gas and diesel is table stakes. upfit compatibility and real-world duty cycle is what fleet managers are watching.
