Let’s simplify some terms in the BOQ. 1. Provisional Sum. An allowance for work that can’t be fully detailed at tender stage. There are two types: a. Defined Provisional Sum; Not fully designed, but enough information is provided scope, location, extent, and limitations. Contractor is expected to plan for it (programme + prelims). E.g. kitchen fittings, M & E installation mostly.. b. Undefined Provisional Sum. Little or no information available at tender stage. Contractor makes no allowance, time & cost implications come later when defined. E.g. Demolition and Alterations mostly, external works. Bottom line: Defined = foreseeable Undefined = uncertain (risk stays with the employer) Video to come later..
