Yes, they’re thinly traded
And yes, they’re usually tiny business a with low potential for growth
And while I’ll concede that they are often bad investments that require way too much effort to understand, there are several advantages including:

M&A rumor hits a community bank I own.
The stock: up 40%.
The town Facebook group: in mourning.
Comment with 200 likes: “If they take away Diane I’m moving my money to the coffee can.”
Understand this: Diane IS the deposit franchise. The acquirer is paying 1.6x book for Diane.
I’m holding. Diane’s not going anywhere.

Regulator: “Your loan concentration in agriculture is 61%. What’s the risk mitigation plan?”
Bank president, 3rd generation: “I’ve had dinner with every borrower’s family.”
“That’s not in the framework.”
It’s been the framework since 1948. The framework has never had a loss the model can’t explain and the model has never had a dinner.

Minutes, annual shareholder meeting, First National Bank of [pop. 3,400]:
Location: The Methodist church basement
Attendance: 11 shareholders, one casserole
Q&A: One question, about the parking lot
Meeting adjourned: 22 minutes
Not in the minutes:
The bank has earned money for 97 consecutive years.
Three shareholders in that basement paid for their farms with the dividends.
The stock doesn’t trade on an exchange.
You buy it the way I did — by writing the CFO a letter.
Some moats have drive-thrus.
