The dust had barely settled on Chelsea’s humiliating exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain when Enzo Fernandez cast doubt on his future at the club. “I don’t know,” Fernandez said after the match when asked by ESPN Argentina if he would be at Chelsea next season Chelsea’s owners BlueCo are adamant they have no interest in selling their best players. But in light of his public equivocation, it is worth considering what Fernandez leaving could mean for Chelsea. ✍️ @liam_twomey and @anantaajith 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/71293…

𝑸𝑼𝑬𝑺𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵𝑺? Rockets, remontadas, Real and, er, a new AFCON champion 🔥🤯 Bit of a mad one for @acjimbo, @cdeccleshare, @jaydmharris & @liam_twomey to get stuck into tomorrow morning. Which bits should they be getting stuck into? 🎙️

Boos at the final whistle from #CFC fans, although Not many left in the stadium to do so. A terrible night for the club, humbled by PSG 8-2 on aggregate.

It will take more than a suspended transfer ban and £10million fine from the Premier League to stop Chelsea supporters chanting Roman Abramovich’s name in times of trouble. It is even more unlikely to prompt some grand cancelling or even a significant reappraisal of the Abramovich era among Chelsea supporters. For some, it may even constitute fresh cause for admiration, evidence that they once had an owner so desperate to build a winning team that he was prepared to break the rules in order to do it. But it might be healthy if it tempers a little the rose-tinted view of the Abramovich era that has taken hold under BlueCo’s widely unpopular ownership. ✍️ @liam_twomey 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/71232…

Reece James is sadly injured for several weeks, but could we have predicted it? Something we discussed recently, with a higher incidence of muscular issues when a new manager comes in — and when a player is asked to take on a new role. @TheAthleticFC nytimes.com/athletic/69831…

All breaches occurred under the previous ownership and academy leadership. BlueCo self-reported to UEFA, Premier League and FA when made aware of the illegal payments and cooperated fully with the PL's investigation. A separate FA process is still ongoing

Chelsea handed suspended one-year ban on first-team signings, nine-month ban on academy signings and fined £10.75million by the PL for historic breaches of rules governing financial reporting, third-party investment and youth development. Full story 👇 nytimes.com/athletic/70812…

Even more people are talking about #CFC’s huddles than at the start of the week when I wrote a piece about it. Of course it had to be updated to reflect the most surreal moment yet…the sight of ref Paul Tierney inadvertently joining in: nytimes.com/athletic/70988…

Not a great week in the life of #CFC 😬 @MattDaviesAdams, @liam_twomey & @SJohnsonSport getting together on Monday to look back on the 1-0 defeat by Newcastle... and a look ahead to the 2nd leg against PSG... How worried are you about where this season is going? 😩💬

Chelsea lost by conceding one of the worst goals I’ve seen in the Premier League yesterday, but Rosenior’s comments ensured the post-match chat has all been about team huddle nonsense. It’s time to focus on the things that matter 👇 nytimes.com/athletic/71190…

Well into the third proper season of this BlueCo project, Chelsea still don’t have a goalkeeper good enough to make their style of play viable at the highest level. It cost them dearly in Paris. 👇 nytimes.com/athletic/71102…

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain meet on Wednesday night in a rematch of last summer’s Club World Cup final. @liam_twomey rewatched that game — and this is what, in retrospect, we did learn and didn’t learn from that game. ■ PSG’s beautiful, brittle brilliance ■ Palmer’s temporary return to his best ■ Joao Pedro: elite No 9 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/71046…

Understandable excitement from #CFC fans over seeing Levi Colwill in training earlier. This is not the first time he’s been with the group but it is still early days in terms of playing again. It is still a good sign & the hope/plan is he will play before the end of the season.
