Congrats to AJR! 🌟 They are brilliant. But I don't agree with their idealized portrayal of institutions in Western development It is historically inaccurate, if not ideologized Thus, not only do they struggle to explain China, they also can't explain why Western economies like the US prospered despite being as corrupt as China is today

🚨Publication alert! 🚨 Happy to see this paper has found its home in @RIPEJournal! I address Hegemony Studies 3.0 and argue that contemporary studies of inter-state hegemony suffer from widespread methodological statism. What does that mean? I explain below. 🧵👇 (1/8)

After ten years of teaching "what is politics?" I have managed to distill my views into a single paragraph, as the introduction to a textbook chapter I have just finished drafting

@MattSleat @lonanglo @aaronjrferguson Yes, that's right on domination. I think I probably would "bite the bullet", as you put it(!), on war is politics by other means, on the basis that I struggle to imagine what non-political armed conflict would look like.

@liamstanley @lonanglo @aaronjrferguson It doesn’t follow that politics must be domination, but it does allow for it. Which might be what you intended. Would you bite the bullet and agree that war is politics by other means, for instance? Would seem to be consistent with your definition.

@AristotlePseudo If you think this looks like a repeat of Lenin, then I think you need to look harder.

@JoeLitobarski I like how Lasswell's formulation is very flexible and intuitive, without privileging any one site of politics. I like Easton's definition, but his wider systems thinking doesn't resonate with me.

@liamstanley Why Lasswell over Easton? Not a criticism, genuinely interested (I personally prefer Easton's definition, but Lasswell is also great).

@jasweidner Yes, exactly. His framing question is genius, and I like too his emphasis on "values".
