The government has declared a national crisis, released emergency reserves, lowered fuel quality standards, and is considering rationing. Petrol hit 238 cents a litre. Diesel 245 cents. Some regional stations reporting $4 a litre. The fastest fuel price surge in the developed world since the war began. Australia imports 90% of its refined fuel from Asian refineries that source crude from the Middle East. The oil arriving now left the Gulf before the war started. The pipeline is emptying in real time. Australia holds 26 days of diesel. It is the only IEA member that has failed to meet the mandatory 90-day reserve requirement since 2012. Six tankers bound for Australia have already been cancelled or deferred. South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia are holding supplies for themselves. The IEA called this the greatest disruption to global energy supplies since the oil shocks of the 1970s. Goldman Sachs said it was worse than 1973 and 1979 combined. Those crises caused recessions, rationing queues, and political collapse across the West. Australia has 26 days of diesel and two refineries producing less than 20% of national demand.
