@estro_newtype_2 This weird alliance between loser communist westerners and fundementalist theocratic muslims has got to be studied. I don't get it. Where did it come from? Are there any books I can read on this phenomena?

That isn't the argument being made. More importantly, Persepolis is not a raw historical document. The issue is not that Satrapi told her "story" whatever that means. The issue is that her story often becomes the story. Her particular class position, political outlook, and social milieu are frequently presented in ways that stand in for Iran as a whole. And, yes, she does have a responsibility if she's actually invested in the national project of her people to be curious about the Revolution, the war, religion, class conflict, and the inner working politics which frequently function less as social processes to be understood and more as backdrops for the her own development of individual consciousness. deeply narcissistic

@TheSportProhet The burden was never on her to curate her inner life for the comfort of others. And if your main concern when an Iranian woman recounts her childhood under compulsory veiling is how that story might affect Western debates about the veil you're basically colonising her perspective

This is a silly response, the west is hegemonic and he book was written in French, published in France, embraced by European and North American cultural institutions, adapted into an internationally celebrated film, and consumed primarily through Western literary markets. The Western reception of the work is therefore not incidental to the discussion; it is central to it. The question is why Persepolis became one of the definitive representations of Iran for Western audiences in the first place.

@TheSportProhet This argument only works if you assume secular Western audiences are the universal audience and that every work of art must be read through their cultural lens rather than on its own terms. But I guess treating your own perspective as the default is typical for Americans.

I'm glad Marjane Satrapi is dead. It was evil of her to be oppressed by non-Americans. A moral woman would choose exclusively to be oppressed by Americans.

the morality police perform two functions in the narrative. They exist as a concrete institution, but in the grand narrative thats abstracted as a proxy for the veil itself. That slippage is what makes the image so powerful and so easily legible to Western audiences already accustomed to reading the veil as a sign of oppression, backwardness, and unfreedom.

you are incredibly stupid, cops can and will have a different social contact with the populace within a given society. And, this has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. The morality police is a stand-in for veiled women more generally. The distinction between a specific institution of social control and a much larger category of religious women collapses as it is being sold to a western audience.

Would you ever complain about a lack of interiority granted to American cops in a piece of autobiographical art depicting police brutality? Come on, man.

The symbolic meaning attached to the morality police is transferred onto the veil itself. The audience is encouraged to associate veiled women with repression, surveillance, coercion, The morality police become the representative image through which veiled women are interpreted, while the complexity of those women's lives, beliefs, motivations, and political commitments fades into the background.

Eu não entendo muito bem por que exatamente o Pix foi surgir no Brasil. Na Europa também parece que é uma ideia de outro mundo você transferir dinheiro pra alguém sem ter que pagar uma taxa a um intermediário.
