Freedom of the press is one of the cornerstones of democracy. And the EU protects what matters, including the right to receive independent, reliable information. The European Media Freedom Act helps keep journalists and sources safe, strengthens editorial independence and protects media organisations from undue interference or legal intimidation. Today, on World Press Freedom Day, we reaffirm our duty to support and protect journalists so they can do their work free from pressure, intimidation, or harm.

My comments on the Attorney General selection process in Guatemala 🇬🇹 from today's Latin America Advisor @The_Dialogue: “The selection process now underway is itself worth celebrating. A strong field of candidates stepped forward, and the nominating commission has held to its timeline—as was the case earlier this year with the appointments to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and Constitutional Court. Adherence to the constitutional timeframes (thus far) and functional checks and balances were both questionable at the start of the year. That signals that Guatemala’s institutional machinery, despite enormous pressure, can deliver. The outgoing attorney general leaves behind a strong track record on organized crime and extradition cooperation, and that work must continue. But the broader context cannot be ignored. President Arévalo was unable to remove the attorney general during her term because of a reform that made the office ‘irremovable.’ Legislators should take note and avoid laws designed to shield a specific individual at a specific moment. The attorney general’s office is central to both the fight against corruption and the fight against organized crime—these are not separate battles. President Arévalo must select someone capable of breaking the ‘lawfare’ pendulum that has politicized prosecutions over the last two decades, while remaining firm in applying the law against the criminal networks that pose the gravest threat to the country. Above all, the next attorney general must be insulated from outside influence—whether from organized crime, influence peddlers or political actors of any stripe.” -- @guatevisible thedialogue.org/latin-america-…
