as we’re talking about what’s happening across west asia right now, it’s worth remembering that “middle east” is a colonial term rooted in british imperial geography. a framework later maintained and reinforced by western powers, including the u.s.. language shapes how regions are understood and controlled, and which powers are positioned at the center of them.
