We are in the preliminary stages of launching a hedge fund with a performance fee based solely on cumulative outperformance versus the S&P 500. Surprisingly, most fund administrators we have spoken to have not encountered this structure. I am also learning that most hedge funds do not even have a hurdle. The state of the industry is pretty pathetic. I would not be surprised if an overwhelming majority provide no value. ~95% leeches is my guess.
