thx @EGU_GD for the opportunity to contribute!! and by "draws parallels" you mean how early antarctic exploration was a male-dominated activity in which catastrophic failures were heralded as huge successes, that's for sure one of 'em. I hope a deeper message transcends all that.

In this week's blog, Dave Stegman (Associate Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography) draws parallels between being a scientist and being an Antarctic explorer @lifetectonic @Scripps_Ocean @EuroGeosciences #EGUBlogs blogs.egu.eu/divisions/gd/2…

instead of learning stuff on this app i switched to an app that helps me learn a foreign language (a bucket list thing for me). i love learning and found that satisfies me. i've competed many other bucket list items the past few years. i'm rededicated to following my dreams (3/4)

Check out our new paper on Archean lithosphere. We show that formation of cratonic roots can occur through naturally occurring lateral compression and thickening of the lithosphere in a self-consistent manner. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

@derek_schutt @geosmx quite geographic dependent - a lot of UCs are in very unaffordable areas, so it amplifies the basic trends seen in other longer term data such as the ratio of median income to median home price compared to 40-50 yrs ago

@geosmx A colleague and I just had this discussion. I think things are better than when I was a graduate student, and graduate school was a definite step up from my previous jobs (both in pay and quality), but I wonder what is a good pay for students.

State budget support for the University of California system has waned considerably since the 1980s. In turn, the UC relied more on tuition revenue. Today the UC's core funding for academics is made up almost equally from state dollars and student tuition bit.ly/2XNNH1d

For those that don’t know, I did my dissertation analyzing the cycle of graduate student that occurred at @UCSanDiego led by workers of @uaw2865 between 2012 and 2017. Their struggle is critical for a number reasons, but especially the following:

@geosmx nice job pointing this out. imo, AGU these days acts more like a lobbyist posing as a professional society, extracting $$ from meeting fees and page charges to pay for a fancy building in DC and a lot of lawyers + lobbyists.
