@OfLogos They did. But old-growth forests don’t respond to fire the way young forests do. Old growth has deep soils, big trees, thick bark, open understories, and stable microclimates….all of which make them far more resilient. Young forests burn hotter, faster, and more completely.

@Tyler_Menzer What we call “new growth” today isn’t the natural early-successional stage that once cycled back into old growth. It’s a permanent rotation of young forest that never matures because of industrial logging.

All species in overshoot collapse, eventually. We humans are no different. Our population will collapse too, and it won't be pleasant, it won't be fun. It'll be absolutely awful. We know it's coming, and we choose to do nothing about it but double down. Cruel and stupid.

A species can vastly overshoot their environment's carrying capacity before their population collapses. While in overshoot, the species dramatically reduces the carrying capacity by degrading the environment. This is the situation for homo sapiens right now.

83 cities on Earth have more people living in them than humans that existed on Earth 10,000 years ago at the beginning of the agricultural revolution. Our population is so far beyond "sustainability" it's laughable. The "panic" about falling birth rates betrays utter ignorance.

"Much less transparency and more cow patties. They want to open up more of our lands to cattle grazing, and in those places where there already are cattle, they want to put in more cattle, regardless of the impacts to our wildlife and our water”. kunm.org/local-news/202…

Western wildfire is often framed as a climate story. But fire behavior also depends on something quieter: the loss of small, uneven disturbance. Sometimes ecosystems don’t unravel when something big disappears. They unravel when the last small thing does.

The world adds 70 million people a year, a billion added in just the past 15 years. This bizarre panic over falling birth rates is both so stupid and so ignorant of the devastating ecological consequences of massive overpopulation and overshoot.

‘Falling birth rates are the worst crisis facing humanity – bar none. No nation in history has been able to recover from the level we’re at now. And we still haven’t begun to understand why it’s happening’ Demographer Stephen J Shaw on population collapse: buff.ly/TYVmo8W

The public version of mine closure is restoration. The ecological reality is containment. Even with billions spent: – toxins persist – landscapes remain altered – systems don’t recover What we call “cleanup” is often just long-term management of a wound that never heals. The mine closes. The consequences don’t.

Environmental lawyers rarely get recognized as ecological “heroes,” but they create something essential: friction. Years ago, I met Jeff Ruch when PEER was just getting started. He has since helped countless federal employees trying to do the right thing for the environment. Change doesn’t always come from power. Sometimes it comes from someone willing to slow the machine. "The situation with lynx ... is similar ... They’re isolated in scattered “postage stamp” areas of good habitat, he said. There also aren’t enough corridors of undisturbed habitat for them to move between habitat areas and breed between subpopulations." cowboystatedaily.com/2026/04/12/lyn…

I was one of those people that wrote one of the 46,000 comments on the federal register, I wasn’t for this because of the shuttering of the laboratories and how I knew that this would lead to losing many scientists even if this administration doesn’t use the word “layoffs“ I know what a restructuring is because I was an HR director and I did many of them.

A seed of spotted knapweed, introduced roughly 30 years ago in part through hay carried by packhorse hunters, is driving significant ecological change across large areas of the 1.3 million acre Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. This past November, there was no snow at all, not in the canyons, not on the ridges, yet spotted knapweed was blooming everywhere in the warm light Thousands of unnamed soil organisms are disappearing as the plant converts diverse understories into simplified stands. The food web is unraveling from the bottom up through a slow motion trophic cascade. Yet from a distance, the wilderness still looks completely intact Even in one of America’s largest protected wilderness areas, invisible biodiversity loss is underway, accelerated by a warming climate.
