This is appalling. Mary Fong Lau was doing 70mph in a 40mph zone when she killed a family of four who were waiting to catch a bus to the zoo to celebrate their wedding anniversary, including two infants. No mechanical fault was found with her Mercedes SUV. She has only JUST changed her plea (after 2 years) from ‘not guilty’ to ‘no contest’ as part of a plea deal. In the meantime, she has transferred her assets - including 3 properties- into newly registered companies formed by her relatives so her victims family cannot sue her. She required a Cantonese interpreter in court. The San Francisco Superior Court Judge said he won’t give Lau prison time, as that would be 'sentencing her to die within the state prison system’. His name is Bruce Chan. Lau may have been 78 when this happened, now 80, but she isn’t some doddery old lady. She has made a series of calculated decisions to reduce HER OWN loss and suffering, like hiding her assets and a last minute plea change. Even if it was a horrible accident, a father, mother, 1 year old and 3 month old baby perished due to Lau’s actions. Other people at the bus stop were injured also. Judge Chan giving Lau no jail time sends a terrible message about the value of the human lives she took, whilst showing more concern about her quality of life. That’s not justice.
