Most people think colonialism ended when the flags changed.
It didn’t.
At least not completely.
Political independence is when a country governs itself.
Economic independence is when a country controls its own wealth, production, finance, technology, and future.
The two are not the same.
A nation can have its own president, parliament, anthem, and flag…
Yet still depend on foreign capital, foreign technology, foreign manufacturing, foreign expertise, and foreign markets to function.
That’s why some countries became independent decades ago but still struggle to translate sovereignty into prosperity.
The harder challenge was never removing colonial administrators.
The harder challenge was building institutions strong enough to replace them.
History teaches us that winning independence is an event.
Building a truly independent nation is a process that can take generations.
And many countries are still in that process today.
What do you think is the biggest obstacle to true economic independence in Africa?
