I’m happy to share some of the projects my team at @datadoghq (the profiling team) has been working on over the past year. One of our main initiatives is to surface complex performance issues through effective visualization of profiling data. lilychencodes.medium.com/surfacing-perf…

A little late to the party, but I'm also gonna quote Taylor Swift and say "the smallest man who ever lived" is one who cannot stand a woman who outshines him. #harrisonbutker

I can’t stand all the Taylor Swift hate and conservative bull💩 on Twitter. I’m moving to Threads. Bye.

@mipsytipsy Hi Charity, can you elaborate on this? Do you mean “if a company does not force their EMs to stop touching technology, it’s not in an IC’s career interest to stay?” So it’s usually in the best interest career wise to work for a company with clear eng/people management separation?

Also worth noting that a nontrivial number of companies all but force their EMs to stop touching technology. If this is yours, I would leave that job, it is not in your interest career-wise to stay. 🪻🌾

Yeah, this is a fair caveat. If you're already a decent senior engineer and manager, it's kind of possible to split your attention between managing a small team and writing code. But you aren't going to improve at either skill set. Those cycles get devoured by context switching.
Russell Howe@rhowe212

@mipsytipsy I think it is *just about* possible if you manage 2-3 people, but both roles still suffer. It ends up being something like an 80eng/20mgmt split for me and I have to very consciously switch mindsets. It means my engineering becomes refactoring and tests but that's fine.

One of my favorite psychological principles is the "Sunk Cost Effect." It likely explains why I just CANNOT quit Duolingo even though learning German is now becoming more of a pain than joy 🤣 I CANNOT GIVE UP MY 160+ days streak!

This site is such a GEM! Not only does it bring awareness to common psychological principles and human fallacies, it also teaches you how these principles are applied in UX design! growth.design/psychology

@mipsytipsy Yes! Thank you so much for saying this! In my 10 years in tech, I’ve not had a single great manager who was also an engineer at the same time. It’s very validating because I was starting to wonder “am I the problem?”

YES!! I believe this is true for most people...we can be good engineers or good managers, or even both. But not at the same time. I've written on this before. 🙃 charity.wtf/2019/01/04/eng… among others.
Shobhit Shrivastava@shri_shobhit

@mipsytipsy What I am realizing now is that I can do both, but not simultaneously! I need a very different frame of mind to operate as an engineer or manager. Is it a common thing?

@mipsytipsy And similarly, feeling supported by manager/peers can and has acted as remedy to/prevention from burnout from the reasons you’ve mentioned.

@mipsytipsy Hi Charity, great list and I agree. I just want to add that as an IC for almost 10 years, nothing has made me lose motivation to work faster than: 1. Lack of empathy from manager. 2. Feeling like I’m being treated unfairly.

My coworker @suchwinston wrote a terrific piece on burnout before the break: honeycomb.io/blog/product-m… There's a reason why burnout and work/life balance are such evergreen topics, and it's not actually because the world is so terribly harsh and everyone is criminally overworked.

Resolution for 2024: prioritize the right things in life. What are the right things? Things that make for a happy life. Like what? Basically just good health/mental health and quality relationships with partner, family and friends.

But also, wow wish I had thought of this earlier before venturing into the wild west of online dating apps trying to find pen pals. Would have saved so much rage from conversations with guys with no EQ.

Hey @duolingo I can't be the only one with this feature request. Can you build a way to actually have a conversation into the platform? It would significantly enhance the learning environment. FYI ChatGPT works fine for v1. #Duolingo

@Hebro_Steele To quote from John Wick 4: “A man’s ambition should never exceed his worth.” (Applicable not to just those who identify as men). Seems she crossed the line.

So for me to check that black box was to move off the merit track and onto the race track where people like Claudine excelled. She is perhaps the most successful black to walk this path, but she is not a free individual.

Profiling is commonly associated with performance optimization, but its applications extend far beyond that. Increasingly, one of the things I’m starting to appreciate more about profiling is that it can help you understand how a language works. medium.com/performance-en…
