Luciobrama macrocephalus Max length 200cm Lives in the Yangtze and Pearl River systems, as well as northern Vietnam. It's a fascinating fish, but it's likely extinct...I look forward to the day it's rediscovered!

@numabenamazu @xypnosii I'm holding out hope that they may still survive in some remote region of the yangtze river, although that maybe wishful thinking

@xypnosii I agree. It's really sad to see such fascinating creatures disappear.

Meet Palaeocampa anthrax, a newly discovered Carboniferous lobopodian, and 150 year old mystery fossil! Palaeocampa is an exceptional lobopodian - it lived in rivers and lakes, bristled with thousands of poisonous spines, and more. 🧵 Open access: nature.com/articles/s4200…

We have hundreds of fish species named elegans, fasciatus, maculatus, etc. Here's one of my favorites: an Amazonian electric fish called Steatogenys elegans, the elegant Steatogenys.

Reminds me of this nice principle in Mayr (4th ed.; 1949), which is about diagnostic features, not just naming. It helps explain why specific epithets are so common across genera. They're only relevant for differentiating within a genus.
