Fieldwork rarely goes exactly to plan. For Sunni Patton from the @vegathurberlab at @UCSB, that unpredictability became a defining part of her recent research trip in the Florida Keys. See how the ability to extract DNA, run PCR, and visualise results directly in the field enabled her to pivot quickly in her investigation of bacteria transmission in staghorn coral. bento.bio/story/detectin…

@parmita At what point did you realize the biology problem was also a hardware, optics, procurement, and scale problem?

the stains are a dimensionality reduction of probably the most complex readout of a live cell that's ever been digitized and this STILL represents a tiny little slice of a cell's actual complexity a lot of people ask if it's like working with bacteria; mammalian, especially a patient's, cells are infinitesimally harder to culture. they require the stuff you require for maybe some cool bacterial image u saw in Nikon small world competition, but at way smaller margins of error, and with scale and reproducibility for model training keeping a mammalian cell alive the way you would with a bacteria was a fun (read: not fun) little (read: long) endeavor lol these ones are near the skin bcs they're melanoma cells, and they require a slightly cooler i.e. 36.5ish celsius temperature, you mess with it and make it 37 and the cells might just randomly stop dividing mammalian cell culture using scalable hardware is absolutely absurd, but so was every single part of being able to do this i share these so openly but like they're near-impossible to actually make from scratch. i could write a book on all the photon related, part procurement related, calibration related, scale related, and biology related reasons why lmao it was torture hahahahaha im not kidding btw, torture

Right now it’s just me. One day you all will be dosing a drug from your laptop and watching Cell Telemetry API do its magic. And creating the largest dataset of drug cell interactions mankind has ever made. Then curing disease could truly be accelerated.

It doesn’t make any sense to be that stem became lib coded and art became right-wing since the culture of accommodating someone’s every insecurity has definitely affected arts moreover

It’s kind of so easy to dismiss someone of any gender’s most profound ideas once you understand the aspects of their personality that struggle with societal expectations and how their ideas are a reaction to that even if presented with stoicism

@sakisavavi in major film/TV disaster and sci-fi fiction, LA has been destroyed or catastrophically wrecked at least 25–40 times. If you include every low-budget disaster movie, TV movie, game, comic, and novel, it is probably well over 100.

There are some cities where there’s too many layers of Hell touching at once. LA is the easiest example I can give.
