Araghchi is making a distinction that the WSJ headline collapsed. "Never refused to go to Islamabad" versus "unwilling to meet U.S. counterparts" are different claims describing different things. Iran is willing to use the Pakistani channel. Iran is not willing to accept the terms being offered through that channel. The WSJ framing, "unwilling to meet", implies a process failure. Araghchi's framing, "what we care about are the terms", implies a substance failure. Those are diplomatically very different situations. If Iran is refusing the channel, there is no path. If Iran is refusing specific terms while accepting the channel, there is a negotiating problem with a potentially solvable structure. The terms Iran has stated publicly are documented: end to the war, security guarantees against future attacks, recognition of Hormuz governance rights, reparations. Washington has not publicly responded to any of these specifically. Multiple U.S. intelligence agencies assessed this week that Iran is not willing to engage in substantive negotiations. Araghchi is saying the assessment mischaracterizes the Iranian position, they will talk, they won't capitulate. The distinction matters more today than any other day of the war. The WSO is missing inside Iran for a second day. A captured American airman changes every term in that negotiation simultaneously. If the channel is open but the terms are the problem, there is a framework for a quiet conversation about the WSO that doesn't exist if Iran has refused the channel entirely. Pakistan is the key. The channel is the asset. The terms are the obstacle.
