I’m sorry but the future belongs to those who read widely, who are able to write without the assistance of a machine, who haven’t allowed endless slop to kill their curiosity and cognitive abilities. Excess tech is going to melt many brains. Yours doesn’t need to be one of them.

TL;DR: For a journalist, IMHO, think of your chatbot as a combination of an intern, a first-pass editor, and a fact-checker. It's job is to do grunt work and help you turn in cleaner copy, not to "inspire" you.

I use AI to do research (i.e., find things to read, explain parts of academic papers I find ambiguous or confusing), transcribe interviews, generate pushback on my column thesis, suggest trims when I'm over my word count, sharpen podcast interview questions, and perform a final fact check on columns and editorials. But mostly it's compressing the ancillary tasks to the main job: reading, thinking, and writing.

This is literally what my students say when they get busted using AI. “I didn’t use it to write my paper just for brainstorming, outlining, and editing.” Yeah that’s most of what writing is.

@Steven_Hyden Depends on why you're writing and if there is a deadline. I write, for example, to earn money. I'm not paid to 'love the game.' The process is not 'the whole point.' The point is providing a service for a client and a product they can use.

Depressing to come on here & see pro writers/journalists talk about using AI to "streamline" the process of writing. Really shows how many players have no love for the game. The process is the whole point! Trying to figure it out, & then figuring it out, is why you write!

sorry for harping on this but the problem of “knowing what you want to say but not how to say it” often means you haven’t yet figured out what you want to say. if you turn to an LLM to help organize loose thoughts into prose, you’re outsourcing your cognition to a machine

Laura Nyro was one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her time in the late Sixties, but the music industry never really understood her. Who will remember her now? rollingstone.com/music/music-fe…

This is why it's BS when people say "oh don't worry, the most masterful writers/lawyers/coders/whatever can't be replaced by AI." How do you think they became masters? By doing constant, repetitive work on a smaller scale for years. The work that AI is doing now. Work that now they'll never get a chance to do. x.com/CharlotteAlter…

Patti LaBelle on Laura Nyro: “She had this soft quality of bringing the songs to life and making them sound so different... They were her songs. She had that ability.”
