A genie appears. It offers: never write another line of SQL again, never write a Bash script again, never write a Dockerfile again, never write a benchmark or an elaborate test again — it will all be done for you. You say: nah, wouldn't make me more productive.

How do backend developers show proof of work? No UI, no screenshots… so what’s the portfolio?

It's really sad that Chrome laid off one of the world's best CSS developer-designers, and now they have to fake demos of web features. youtu.be/d8J0vs-bEPE?si…

@FirefoxWebDevs Hey, Jake. How do these custom commands interact with web components? For example, can I have a custom element that listens to command events? What if the element with ID is in the shadow root? And unrelated: does the event come with a reference to a button that triggered it?

@ryanflorence 20 years ago we needed 12 divs per button to make corners round. One would think that with CSS advances we would need fewer divs. But my gut feeling tells me that even 11k is too low 🤣

Gmail, Shopify Admin, and this site (Twitter) all have about the same number of elements on the page when you do document.querySelectorAll('*') How many do you think that is?

@dhh Previously big salary jumps in the US would eventually trickle down to UK and the rest of Europe within few years, but this “time lag” kept getting wider and wider, and now I don’t really expect the earnings gap to ever close.

@dhh Meanwhile, a lot of digital goods and some physical goods, too, set prices for EU market based on US one, so percentage-wise we pay a lot more for things like subscriptions than we used to.

Whenever I see programmer salary numbers from Europe, I always have to do a double take. It's hard to fathom that we work in the same industry. With bonuses this year, many of our folks are at $400,000+, and we're not even in any AI-hype sector.

@bcardarella You may type the exact title of a video (pretty specific one, too) and if it will not show it to you if it doesn’t have enough views (by whatever metric they decide on). So annoying!

YouTube's search is horrible. There have be billions of videos on YouTube at this point, and I feel like (by design) YouTube only ever exposes me to very surface level stuff. Even direct term search constantly reroutes me to that same repetitive result set.

You can 𝚊𝚜𝚢𝚗𝚌 𝚏𝚞𝚗𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚍𝚊𝚒𝚕𝚢() { "𝚞𝚜𝚎 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔𝚏𝚕𝚘𝚠"; 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚎 (𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚎) { 𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚒𝚝 𝚜𝚕𝚎𝚎𝚙("1 𝚍𝚊𝚢"); 𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚒𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐(); } } It’s wild how robust the model is. It seems magical but it’s ackchually super consistent That said, we will make the cron use case nicer. You can also drop the second 𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚒𝚝 to adjust the periodicity and not let the duration of 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 influence the time of the day the job starts at.
