Even in the final months of the USSR, as the Russians were terrorizing the people of the Baltic states with not only physical brutality, but having cut off food and gas imports to starve the population, the US, UK, France and Germany pressured Vilnius to "ease tensions" with Moscow by offering concessions and to "cease the passing of anti-soviet laws".
The west never learns.
On January 13, 1991, Lithuanians stood hand in hand to defend our Parliament and the institutions of a state with restored independence as Soviet tanks rolled in.
In harsh winter conditions, prayers, songs, and shared hot tea proved stronger than armor and bullets.
14 were killed – and their sacrifice became a symbol of victory, not defeat.
