'many NDIS participants don't get to choose where they live... At best, this state-of-affairs is manifestly unfair. At worst, it risks condemning people with disability to segregated institutional life ... We cannot allow that to continue.'ministers.dss.gov.au/speeches/13421

The fact I have choice over my supports means I can be up at 8am to attend this NDIS Review media briefing. The recommendations that will be released today must NOT force me to choose registered providers because I need flexibility and choice to get the support that I need

Queensland relying on private boarding houses 4 people with disabilities with nowhere else to go - in Victoria, these are the default option from mental health facilities for people with mental illness with nowhere else to go @lynm @LisaMBrophy abc.net.au/news/2023-06-1…

@SimonKatterl Exactly Simon, these places are not consistent with article 19 of the CRPD for people to live in non segregated environments in a place of their choosing with people they choose to live with. Total anathema. We need a policy commitment to 'pathways out of SRS'.

Really important article from @lizdearn. We should be regulating in the short term, and shutting down in the medium term, these SRS facilities. They not compatible with a 21st century community based on inclusion, equality and human rights.

The mix of "for-profit" institutional settings and "vulnerable" residents provide the foundations for opportunism where the NDIS is seen as new potential revenue source @MsLynM @LisaMBrophy @ResearchRMIT

@lizdearn presenting important findings from their research #CMHA2023 this slide says it all - but after 40 years of enquires these models have survived and are even profiting from the NDIS - it’s time to develop pathways for people with psychosocial disability to get out of SRS

@SummerFoundtn @DiWinkler Not wanting to disagree but in the last few weeks I stumbled across someone living in a supported residential service (SRS). There shouldn't be a contest about which group is the most vulnerable, yet people living with psychosocial disability in SRS experience similar outcomes.

Shocking to read about the frequency of abuse and neglect in #disability group homes in Australia. Glad to publish an article in @ConversationEDU about new models and solutions that have the potential to transform disability #housing.

Research that considers deeply the everyday experience of folk living in #SRS facilities is so rare. Another reason I am so pleased to see these findings reach the public domain. And hell yeah they’re institutions! Ask those who live in them.

I am so proud to be involved in this publication and fantastic work by @lizdearn - it has provided an opportunity to enable some contribution to trying to ensure the experience of people in SRS is heard

'the tiny fraction' of NDIS appeals in AAT the minister refers to is costing over $13 million in legal fees, not to mention the emotional cost to participants and impact of delays in funding much needed support and equipment. @SummerFoundtn @MsLynM @drgeorgethecrip @LisaMBrophy
