There’s been this sudden wave of Chris Redfield hate lately, and it’s not coming from people who actually experienced Resident Evil… it’s coming from people who learned the entire franchise through TikTok edits and comment sections.
And the funniest part? Some of you hate Chris while loving Claire Redfield. Do you even hear yourselves?
That’s her brother… How does it even make sense that you love Claire but hate Chris when Claire herself loves Chris this much? This doesn’t feel fair at all. The same man who stepped up and practically became a father figure when they lost their parents. He didn’t just exist in the background, he carried responsibility most people wouldn’t survive.
But sure, reduce him to “selfish” because of a 15 second edit. There’s a whole crowd right now doing character analysis without ever finishing a single game, reading a single file, or actually understanding the story. You saw a comment like “Ethan and Piers died because of him” and just ran with it like it’s canon truth.
But anyone who actually knows the story knows this, Chris didn’t just lose teammates… he lost parts of his life with them. He lived believing Jill Valentine was dead. He stood in front of her grave. A fake grave. He carried that guilt for years, thinking he failed someone who meant everything to him. You think that just disappears? You think that doesn’t break a person?
And yet he kept going. Not because he’s heartless, but because he can’t afford to break. Same with Piers Nivans and Ethan Winters. He didn’t “sacrifice” them like some villain. Chris is always the one walking at the front, taking the heaviest burden, making decisions no one else wants to make.
That’s the entire point of his character. He’s not clean. He’s not perfect. But neither is anyone in Resident Evil… especially not in a world shaped by bio-terror, loss, and impossible choices. And let’s not forget who stood against Albert Wesker for years.
Chris did. Not for glory, not because he’s some flawless hero, but because someone had to. Calling him “empty” or “selfish” isn’t a valid critique… it’s just proof you’re building your opinion off surface-level content. You’re reacting to edits, not understanding a narrative.
Resident Evil isn’t some trend that popped off because of social media. This series has been standing strong since 1996. It wasn’t built on aesthetics… it was built on loss, sacrifice, and the weight of survival.
And Chris Redfield? He’s one of the pillars of that foundation. You don’t have to like him. Hate him if you want. But at least understand what you’re hating. Because reducing a character like Chris to TikTok-level discourse says more about the audience than it does about the writing. I’ve even seen people say “he should’ve died, he should have killed himself” or worse.
You really think a man who’s gone through that much hasn’t faced those thoughts? The difference is, he didn’t have the luxury to give in. He had people to protect. That’s where the real selfishness shows. Not in Chris, but in the people judging him without understanding the weight he carries.
What surprises me the most is how often the fandom sidelines him, like he isn’t one of the main faces of the franchise. Like he didn’t help carry this series for decades. Ignoring what he’s been through and still calling him “selfish” is ironic… because that’s exactly what that word actually means in this context. The last time we saw him as a main character was 17 years ago, and now they can’t even stand hearing his name. “Not Chris again! We’re tired of hearing about him!” Calm down… please. He’s not gonna hurt you.
Say whatever you want about him. At the end of the day, Chris Redfield is still that towering figure… like a massive tree standing through every storm… shielding the people he loves under his shadow, no matter how much it costs him. And that legacy? It’s a lot older, and a lot stronger than any comment section.
Leave him alone.
