@lizrobuck This was so well written, Liz. The compounding impact of demonstrating an adventurous life full of experimentation brings such long term benefits. I still remember the shock on our kids faces when we coerced them into eating oysters in Northern Ireland.

Travel cultivates antifragility in kids. Through travel we can teach them - the ability to sleep anywhere - openness to trying new + unusual foods - comfort with meeting new people who look/talk/dress differently - adaptability when flights get canceled/plans change - curiosity about the world What else?

Courage is learned, and modeling is teaching. We teach our kids courage by modeling it ourselves.

They say “Neurons that fire together wire together.” How can we as parents encourage “joy” neurons to fire alongside “learning” neurons, linking the two for life?

Parent from fear and we get fearful kids. Parent from courage and we get courageous kids.

@rebelEducator Mine's almost two - loves learning + will practice newly learned skills over and over. Recently he learned how to operate the Dustbuster...he's not the most efficient janitor, but he sure is a passionate one.

And to cultivate an adventurous spirit in our child, we need to fearlessly expose them to new places, new people, new cultures, new foods, and new activities.

American culture pushes a fear-based approach to parenting, prioritizing “safety” above all else.
