Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale convened the Quarterly Ministerial Health Sector Stakeholders Meeting with the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), led by Chairperson Dr. Kanyenje Gakombe, bringing together leaders from the private healthcare sector to review progress on health reforms and strengthen public-private collaboration. The Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed that partnerships between Government and the private sector are essential to delivering Universal Health Coverage (UHC), noting that collaboration is key to expanding equitable access to quality, affordable and people-centred healthcare. The meeting reviewed progress on priority reforms, including sustainable health financing, digital health, medical supply chains and the response to non-communicable diseases. Discussions focused on strengthening prevention, early detection, treatment and continuity of care for conditions such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. On pharmaceutical regulation, the Cabinet Secretary said reforms at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) have enhanced transparency, efficiency and regulatory oversight. He noted that more than 2,596 counterfeit and substandard medical products have been removed from the market, while permits for parallel importation have been abolished to strengthen regulation and safeguard the integrity of Kenya’s pharmaceutical supply chain. He further called on the private sector to support the Local Manufacturing Strategy by expanding domestic production of pharmaceuticals and medical products, promoting technology transfer, attracting investment and driving innovation to strengthen national health security. The Cabinet Secretary also underscored the importance of the proposed Quality of Care Healthcare Bill, saying it will establish a comprehensive framework to improve patient safety, strengthen service delivery and enhance accountability across both public and private health facilities. He invited the Federation to participate in the upcoming Kenya Health Summit 2026, which will showcase the country’s health reforms, strengthen partnerships and accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage. The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Director of Public Health and Sanitation Dr. Stephen Muleshe, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr. Waqo Ejersa, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Kariuki, senior Ministry of Health officials and representatives from the private healthcare sector.

From a health perspective, we failed the young man who failed to access ICU care right in the middle of the city. We really need to increase our emergency and critical care services.

A Kenya Airways pilot has died after being found unconscious near the entrance of Nairobi West Prison along Langata Road, with detectives now treating the case as a murder following the results of a postmortem examination. According to police, Kelvin Wachira was discovered unconscious on July 19 by an officer attached to Prison Headquarters who was heading home. He was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he died the following day despite receiving medical treatment. His body was transferred to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination conducted on July 22 concluded that he suffered a head injury caused by blunt force trauma. Investigators have since classified the case as murder. Preliminary investigations indicate that Wachira had visited the Nairobi West Prison officers mess at about 3 p.m. on July 19 to meet friends for drinks. Police say a confrontation later broke out between him and several people at the venue. A waiter reportedly escorted Wachira to his white Mercedes Benz, which remained parked inside the prison compound. Investigators believe he later left the vehicle under circumstances that are still unclear before he was found unconscious outside the prison entrance. The vehicle was later moved to the local police station as part of the ongoing investigation. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Langata have taken over the case. Detectives are interviewing witnesses, reviewing security camera footage, and working to establish what happened before and after the reported altercation.

We need health centralised, otherwise cadre politics will never end. Counties will employ cheaper cadres and all mathogothanios will be managed at parastatal facilities and those working there will blame cheaper cadres.
