@BugmanMD I don’t think I’ve gone through any attempt with this one without being annoyed for the vast majority of the runtime. I just don’t think it’s good, but then again INLAND EMPIRE and TP:TR are the only ones I find so remarkable.

whew I have such a hard time w/ everything after Laura Harring opens the blue box in MULHOLLAND DRIVE (the final dinner scene being particularly difficult.) And it all leads to a typical final banging together of some of the film's elements before that goofy old couple finale.

@poshspicelatte She’s annoying and her schtick is definitely a performance but she truly is gorgeous and her sabrina carpenter impression is so so funny

@BugmanMD Chinese Bookie is one of the better ones tbh; the worst offenders are the gena rowlands ones with the comically large actorly nonsense. Method acting is unforgivable in my book.

@BugmanMD Just checked my LB and apparently I had the same reaction to RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY as I did MD but I had somehow forgotten the former existed. I only saw the first of THE WESTERNER eps and remember really liking it but wasn't in the right headspace. I should give it another go.

@lnfiniteCapsize RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY remains my favorite of the features--it's a little more stately, there's something there that grounds SP's tendencies. I gotta say though, his episodes of THE WESTERNER are really, really special...

HARD LABOUR: So fascinated by Leigh’s framing here. The textural grittiness always at odds with the exaggerated/stylized performances. I can’t help but wonder whether he’s shooting *against* the performance style. Either way, the effect is pretty potent.
