in honor of @PittBioSci work on duckweed I always use a picture of it in my lecture slides when I transition from talking about prokaryotes to eukaryotes in intro bio

here's my cheat for using RStudio cloud for first-time #rstats coders. includes some issues that can trip up folks (e.g. cranky pop-up blockers)

Here's my (opinionated) written guide to getting started with #rstats/RStudio/RStudio cloud, and online resources for learning which I use in my classes

I am working on simple videos for my online #rstats course for total R/coding beginners (sophomore undergrads).

in this #rstats video for total beginners, I discuss how to use RStudio cloud primer. super easy to use, but a few quirks that could throw off people new to coding

@riridoesthings what's the reference for the study? I'd love to discuss it in my stats and intro bio classes. estimating a general correction factor for any group is statistically tenuous at best 😐

are there #rstats tools for converting a text bibliography to bibtex or another standard format?

@wild_ecology sounds like a great way to test ecological theory and knowledge of the speies

New article out with @elborgo9 and @keith_lohse on "Ten Common Statistical Errors From All Phases of Research, and Their Fixes." DM me for a copy of the pdf (these articles appear to be on a lagged open access schedule!).

I submitted my grades, took a day off email, and today there are only like 5 emails in my in box. What did I do wrong? @RaineeKaz @burhanco2

@TrashBirdEcol I wonder if the term "informatics" would be useful for explaining how statistics is different than data science. to me, a data scientists has to be able to find, access, clean, and communicate. stats folks (at least in the classroom) usually assume data is given and tidy
English

@TrashBirdEcol thx; mostly lines up w/ my thoughts. I like your def. of ecoinf; I've been trying to frame how comp bio is different than bioinformatics; thinking in terms of what is ecoinformatics (where data is much more heteregenous) is helpful
English

@TrashBirdEcol (they're arbitrary labels, but i'd like to be able to justify, at least to myself, why I teach some things and not others)
English

@TrashBirdEcol random question - have you ever seen anything written on what's the difference between statistical ecology, quantitative ecology, and computational ecology
I teach a computational biology course and I'm trying to come up with a way of delineating closely related field. 1/
