Starting a thread on #rstats #r4ds for brainstorming how to teacher R to first timers. First - use @rstudio cloud , which was free for educators last year. 1/

I have a teaching #rstats joke but there are too many ways to tell it

@riridoesthings what's the reference for the study? I'd love to discuss it in my stats and intro bio classes. estimating a general correction factor for any group is statistically tenuous at best 😐

are there #rstats tools for converting a text bibliography to bibtex or another standard format?

Discussion question: is there value (define as you will) in establishing populations of extirpated wildlife species in isolated habitat patches, even if those populations will be 100% isolated? Think large urban natural areas or oases in the corn desert.

@TrashBirdEcol I wonder if the term "informatics" would be useful for explaining how statistics is different than data science. to me, a data scientists has to be able to find, access, clean, and communicate. stats folks (at least in the classroom) usually assume data is given and tidy

@TrashBirdEcol thx; mostly lines up w/ my thoughts. I like your def. of ecoinf; I've been trying to frame how comp bio is different than bioinformatics; thinking in terms of what is ecoinformatics (where data is much more heteregenous) is helpful

@TrashBirdEcol (they're arbitrary labels, but i'd like to be able to justify, at least to myself, why I teach some things and not others)

@TrashBirdEcol random question - have you ever seen anything written on what's the difference between statistical ecology, quantitative ecology, and computational ecology I teach a computational biology course and I'm trying to come up with a way of delineating closely related field. 1/
