Zizek is one of the most overrated public intellectuals in history. “I like to say paradoxical things because it makes me sound profound and brings attention to me! By the way, I’m very smart!” Once again, Chomsky was right: “why do people take this guy seriously?”
Natural Philosophy@Naturalphilosy

“I despise the kind of book which tells you how to live, how to make yourself happy. Philosophers have no good news for you at this level. I believe the first duty of philosophy is making you understand what deep shit you are in!” — Slavoj Žižek

Congratulations to Stephan Schmid, Hamid Taieb and contributors on this new volume, which charts the history of the #philosophicalconcept, from ancient Greek to modern times, and shows how it evolved into the key notion of philosophy

@rbnmckenna86 @hanno_sauer Have you ever considered that having a 1-10 system but never giving a 9/10 means that the learning outcomes and the assessment are not aligned? Ideally, someone gets a 10 if they meet all the learning outcomes. I literally learned that in my teaching qualification course...

@hanno_sauer Have you done what we have in the UK and converged on giving almost everything 6 or 7 (we do out of 100 so we can have a bit of variety—62 vs 65 etc)?

I never understood this. In Utrecht, we have grades 1-10, and 10 is literally never, ever used. 9 is extremely, extremely rare (I have given it twice in 10 years) and 8.5 (which is cum laude level) is tough to get
Jason Furman@jasonfurman

I will be enthusiastically supporting faculty legislation to cap the number of A's at Harvard at 20% (plus a bit). The collective action problem that has driven grades higher & higher over time is increasingly problematic. I hope other institutions consider similar steps.

@EmmanuelMacron I am a junior researcher. The biggest grant I can apply to is an ERC grant which is 1.5 million. This gets me one postdoc for 3 years and one PhD for 4 years, and a little bit of research time. So 30 million is very little. It's 15 starting ERC grants...15!

In France, we believe in science. That is why, on May 5, I issued a clear and open call to the world: for science, choose France. I am very proud to see that this call has resonated so strongly. Around forty leading researchers have chosen France. Through “France 2030”, we have invested more than €30 million to advance health, climate action, artificial intelligence, and fundamental sciences. Science has found its home.

link.springer.com/article/10.100… 6 years ago, I wondered what philosophers mean when they say "Commitment to a proposition." It took me 6 years to publish the answer. The answer is...it depends!

We must design technology in a way that is moral. But do you think new technologies change what we consider right and wrong? Robin Hillenbrink and I have written about this @esdit_nl cambridge.org/core/journals/…
