New blog post: The third wave of American philanthropy Hundreds of billions of dollars in new philanthropic capital will soon become liquid. The OpenAI Foundation holds 26% of OpenAI, worth about $220B at today’s valuation. Anthropic’s seven co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their wealth and have instituted the most aggressive donor matching program for employees in tech history. How much does this all add up to? And how meaningful is that in the context of philanthropy today? I was doing some simple napkin math to wrap my head around the scale of what’s coming, and radicalized myself in the process. I had dramatically underappreciated the scale of the philanthropic capital that’s about to become available and the corresponding gap in talent and organizations that will be needed to make the most of it. This piece aims to directionally sketch the scale of what’s coming, the gap in operational capacity needed to absorb it, and what we can do to fill it. (Link to full post in reply)

I have a philosophy degree and also a bunch of stem degrees (neuroscience, biomedical engineering, partial computer science PhD). I can say definitively that the philosophy degree made me a better thinker out of any of them, which is downstream much more net useful when integrated over the totality of life. It's just harder to measure.

Student: “the paper wasn’t written by AI but I did use ai to brainstorm ideas” Me: “Are you willing to share a link to those chat logs? It could corroborate your claim.” So far, no takers. (N.b., my syllabus prohibits “brainstorming” with AI)

@photo_matt @Duderichy Maybe mid-career. Early-career when you're still learning it is infinitely better to be at a startup, because you'll be put in a greater number of diverse situations and will end up being dramatically more competent

@lofofty @Duderichy The majority of startups crash and burn with engineers just hopping from startup to startup. It is dramatically better for your life to get a ton of FAANG stock than it is spend 80 hours at a doomed startup built by a psycopath.

@liminal_warmth I mean, how is it not obviously true that Ant is the expected ASI winner? They've had the best talent for like a year now. basically all of my friends with freedom of choice to go to one or the other have picked ant.

@Michael_Druggan @justalexoki Is this really true / what is the empirical evidence? I have been trying to figure out if this is true or not for a bit now and don't think I've fully landed

@justalexoki Women like muscular guys but it's socially unacceptable to admit to liking bodybuilder/fitness influencer type physiques in many female circles so this is the body type they compromise on.

I think I'm perfectly fine, thanks. I would think carefully about the way you interpret things in the worst possible light though. I really don't want to continue this conversation though, because, again, you're a really unpleasant person to interact with and I much prefer interacting with people who are joyful. I will try to tear myself off - I have a bad habit of arguing with insane people on the internet rather than just letting them be!

@lofofty You picked the wrong place to try to make that point. I do believe you need professional help. A normal man would not do what you did.

@BurnaGraceSuss I literally was not even slightly doing that, and you are willfully completely misinterpreting my point because you really want to believe I'm bad, for some reason?

@lofofty You were making excuses for incestuous child rape. You were in the wrong. Full stop.

@BurnaGraceSuss @BBHVHOBI @alfkkifine @xevekiah In all seriousness, please don't say things like that. I get that you're on the internet and think you can speak really horribly to strangers, but I am a real person and the thought of that makes me legitimately shudder. Crossed a bit of a line for me, so I'm out. Take care

It sounds dramatic, but I genuinely decided to end my relationship with my boyfriend because he “teased” or jokingly said that if we had a daughter, and she inherited my looks and turned out really beautiful, he might feel attracted to her in an incestuous way. He laughed, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what kind of person even says that.

@BurnaGraceSuss @InnocentlyEris @lullabystarlust Don't worry, I'm not - I actually feel great right now. I'm sitting next to some close friends with a nice cup of coffee co-work together. We're going to cook some dinner together later! I appreciate you checking in though.
