Non-English speakers, what is your language's equivalent to "oh?" or "huh?" For Vietnamese it's "úa?"

@HNTurtledove Tangentially, why do we think "medieval" is a synonym for vicious? If I've really had it with someone I'd want to go early modern on their culo.

So, I am writing this article about Bond and STIs, and how sex is the one thing Bond is completely in the fantasy realm over. He does superhuman interpretation of regular human feats--he doesn't fly; he's just a better golfer, climber, swimmer than you...

@3octaves In live and let die (IIRC) there is the line about risking a shot after picking up a woman?

Bond practicing card-sharping (mundane realism) before going to the Casino to kick some baddie butt works for the hero. It would be difficult to make getting checked for STIs before starting a case feel grounded, much less noble.

@lbrothers @ericasatifka We had "physics for poets" and "rocks for jocks" (intro to geology.) Profs loved teaching them because there was no pressure or expectations.

People are dunking on this but it honestly was true for me. At my (public, low ranked) college you only had to take one science or math class EVER if you were an English major, and they had a specific gimme class designed for us that was worse than my HS science classes.

Any university worth its salt will require extensive grounding in the humanities in order to graduate regardless of major. But no humanities major will ever receive a foundation on biology, chemistry, physics, and math

"It’s orders of magnitude easier to get into Harvard than it is to get into something like Clarkesworld or The Dark." I feel less shitty about not breaking either market now. So, fucking Harvard? What about it?
