And even before the final Agni Kai, you can see Zuko is able to far better contend with Azula, so you can argue he’s not far behind.

In my opinion it's not badly written it's deliberately written. Korra and Aang are direct opposites. They mirror each other. Aang was carried by his team of prodigies while Korra was the prodigy carrying the team. Korra literally broke her back carrying them.

The actual bad writing in Korra is that her team is just not as strongly written compared to Aangs team. Even the animals were boring 😭Korra did a lot of heavy lifting for them.

The creativeness that was added to bending styles in atla is why lok will never come close to it, these guys made bending feel like an art, an extension of ones body every bending style had specific body movements, whereas in legend of korra it was just punching and kicking
