You have written a treatise "On Nature" which is difficult to understand and interpret. In some passages, if interpreted word for word, it seems to contain a certain insight into the world, the universe, and all that happens within it, things that are in divine motion. However, most parts are obscure, and for this reason even those who have studied your writings extensively have difficulty understanding what you really mean. King Darius, son of Hystaspes, therefore wishes to hear you and to become acquainted with Greek learning. Come quickly, then, and visit me at my palace. The Greeks usually pay little attention to wise men and overlook the important truths they establish, which are valuable both to hear and to know. I, on the other hand, am prepared to grant you every privilege and to live according to your advice, listening daily to your excellent discourses.” Heraclitus of Ephesus replied as follows: “Heraclitus of Ephesus greets King Darius, son of Hystaspes. All those who happen to live upon the earth are indifferent to truth and justice and cling only to greed and ambition because of their evil folly. As for me, since I have forgotten all wickedness, avoid all excesses that are closely connected with envy, and moreover have no desire to associate with arrogance, there is no chance that I will come to the land of the Persians. I shall be content with little, as I consider right.” The work written by Heraclitus was entitled "On Nature" and contained knowledge concerning the universe, theology, and politics. He dedicated it to the temple of Artemis and took care to write it with deliberate obscurity, so that it could be understood only by capable people and would not be despised because of a vulgar, popular style. Ariston tells us that when Euripides brought Heraclitus’ book to Socrates to read, Socrates, after reading it, said: “It needs a Delian diver so as not to drown in it.” He meant to emphasize how difficult it is to understand the work unless one analyzes the philosophy of Heraclitus in depth, since he had encoded his entire book. “I am Heraclitus. Why do you illiterate people drag me up and down? I did not labor for you, but for those who can understand me. To me, one man is worth thirty thousand, and the countless are worth nothing. These words I shall also say to Persephone. Do not hurry to finish the book of Heraclitus of Ephesus. It is a very difficult path. There is night and darkness with no light at all.
