if shane d!ed from the hit, ilya would have had to live with the fact that he had planned to end things with shane that night after the game. ridden with guilt and the constant mental image of shane laying unconscious on the ice, ilya leaves the raiders and retires from hockey shortly after the incident. with nothing left for him in america, he visits shane’s grave in canada one last time before he flies back to russia to try and live a low profile life in a small town. whilst there, he visits his mother’s grave and tells her all about shane– from their first encounter outside the rink in regina in 2009, up to their phone call where he poured his heart out in a language only one of them understood. on his first visit, he had asked irina to find his shanya and take care of him in the afterlife. as the days pass, ilya hardly gets any sleep as he’s haunted by the image of shane, memories of what they had and thoughts of what more they could’ve had if they weren’t afraid to try. eventually, ilya could no longer bear those thoughts and takes his own life so he could finally be with the only two people in his life he’s ever truly loved – his mama and his shanya.
