Startup competitions come and go in Zimbabwe. Most don’t survive past edition two. The Value Creation Challenge (VCC) is now on its sixth. That alone tells you something.
Run by Old Mutual’s Eight2Five Innovation Hub, the VCC has been a fixture since 2019. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t promise to turn you into a billionaire overnight. What it does is give early-stage entrepreneurs mentorship, business training, connections and, for finalists, some pre-seed funding.
It works. In the 2024 edition, our firend Garikai Dzoma’s ZimPriceCheck won the challenge, taking home US$13,000 in seed funding. By his own account, the VCC was a real boost to the business on so many fronts beyond the cash.

I want to put it out there. Learnmore Jonasi is a nice kid. Full disclosure I have asked him for an interview and he has chosen not to. But this is not an issue. My gripe with him is has an enthusiasm for making Zimbabweans look stupid. He has better material. He should do that. I disagree with Lebo M that he is a wannabe. I just wish he didn't sacrifice us for his fame.

on vibe coded apps that maybe shouldn't exist,
downside is people ignore it, (but even then AI dev has a bit more data about what to build or not and this could be upside)
upside, people love it and it's gets built into a proper app.

I owe our 177 AMH/Hstv colleagues an apology. For a while now we have failed to pay salaries on time. That is not an accounting issue — it is broken trust. School fees unpaid. Rent delayed. Dignity shaken. I am sorry. Unreservedly. The buck stops with me. The cause? Significant debt owed to us by the Government and other clients. The explanation does not erase the obligation. I have written an open letter to all AMH stakeholders — on the salary crisis, the ZBC licence fees story, our leadership transition, and where we go from here. Trevor is good enough a communicator to just write what he thinks are the issues, how deep he feels the situation and what he thinks the way forward/solutions are.
