@TMuhabet @joeylynchy All of those are wrong, UEFA actually enforce the rules on it, has been that way for about a decade. Not going through the entire list but for example - cup runner ups Connahs Quay Nomads and OFI Crete in Wales and Greece didn't qualify, the extra spot pushed down the league.

The simple answer to coefficient concerns is that if you want to stop an NPL side being in the ACL2, then A-Liga clubs should git gud and not let them make the final of the Australia Cup. Perhaps they could start by scoring a goal against them in the R16, QF, or SF.
Joey Lynch@joeylynchy

In @ESPNAusNZ Heidelberg United may soon find itself representing Australia on the Asian stage, after FA confirmed that the Australia Cup runners-up will receive priority for a slot in the ACL2 should Newcastle secure Australia’s spot in the ACLE 🔗: espn.com.au/football/story… .

@tas_zaf @joeylynchy Monaco-France, Ireland-Northern Ireland, Andorra-Spain, San Marino-Italy, Liechtenstein-Switzerland, Sudan-Rwanda (war tbf), Brunei-Malaysia (previously Singapore) are the others I think. Not exactly that uncommon.

@tas_zaf @joeylynchy Normal in 95% of the football world? In 25-26 alone: China, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi, Singapore, UAE, Taiwan and Turkmenistan all nominated from the league, not cup runner up. Similar story in UEFA and CAF - league placing gets chosen not cup runner up.

@lsmith10011 @joeylynchy You've got an issue with something that is normal in 95% of the football world - I've got an issue with something that is normal in 2% of the football world. There simply is nothing to discuss in your case - so might as well switch to a real issue...

@tas_zaf @joeylynchy So we're just switching the topic now because you don't want to read. NZ clubs participating is mutually beneficial end of story. Both stable unlike many Aus clubs in recent years. And it happens in way more countries than that.

@lsmith10011 @joeylynchy Don't see how any of that is relevant. U know what doesnt make sense - having teams from NZ - OFC Fed in the AL, taking the place of AUS based clubs. Pretty confident this doesn't happen anywhere else - apart from MLS (same confed though)

@lsmith10011 @pashos24 @joeylynchy @ESPNAusNZ For example, Millwall got a UEFA Cup Spot in 2004 as FA Cup runners up to Man U, who qualified for Champions League via the Premier League. Stoke and Hull City, similarly in the early 2010s.

@grandsumofan @joeylynchy Good spot - but it's a different situation because Canadian Championship is stronger/more reputable than the Canadian league, as the three MLS sides take part.

@TMuhabet @joeylynchy China, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi, Singapore and the UAE selected the highest placed team from the league for the 2025-26 ACL2 alone. Other countries have done the same in other seasons. Now show me the 100 that do if you think that exists

@tas_zaf @joeylynchy The spot should always defer to the league if the cup and league winner is the same team. How is a cup run where they didn't win and didn't even play pro opposition away from home a better representative than a home & away professional league campaign?

@lsmith10011 @joeylynchy The exception - Not the norm... Why exactly would you have an issue with this anyway? Bergers blitzed the comp - fell short - if they get a place - its well earned - credit where its due.

@davemoore9 @pashos24 @joeylynchy @ESPNAusNZ How did they earn the right when they didn't even win the cup? All around the world that doesn't earn you the right to qualify for continental comps, why should it be here?

@pashos24 @joeylynchy @ESPNAusNZ They earned the right as runners up. They knocked over 3 A-League teams on their way to the final. They are pretty much A League standard anyway. Would not look out of place at all.

@teopellizzeri What trophy did Heidelberg win though? Unprecedented territory if a cup runner up gets to be one of Australias two teams in Asia. Is the cup more important than the league?

How have we even arrived at a situation where fans are deriding one of the few trophies on offer as “preseason” when it’s already a top fan complaint that preseason is too long! Clubs need to collectively imbue trophies with meaning. There’s no tv deal for training sessions.
Josh Parish@joshparish_

Still a few hurdles in the way, but Heidelberg getting into Asia would be a great story, energise the NPL, and encourage A-L sides to treat the cup with more respect. Anyone who thinks they'd 'tank the coefficient' or 'embarrass us' simply hasn't been paying attention.

@smfcmike It appears difficult for some to understand that the qualification spot allocated to the cup competition right across AFC (Japan, Malaysia, Singapore) is rightfully passed down to the second place team in the league if the league champion/ACL3 qualified team wins the cup too.

@djmcbreen It's utterly rare across the world for a cup runner up to go into continental competition - the spot is generally absorbed by the league, I cannot see what the actual reasoning is for this to be any different?

@TMuhabet @joeylynchy This is just blatantly false. Last years Danish Superliga - FCK won the cup final, but since they won the league, their spot pushes down to FCM, and the spots below that push down as a result. Silkeborg were cup runner ups but did not qualify by virtue of doing so.

@lsmith10011 @joeylynchy Every country on earth lmao. If you win the cup and the league your spot always goes to the runner up. League positions are allocated before the season for each tournament same as the cups

@TargetForwardFC @djmcbreen Still not sure what the significance of that is to the AFC spots? The precedent across AFC is that the next best team from the league makes it.

I spoke with John Anastasiadis re this months ago and he said the club was working closely with FA to ensure all AFC criteria was met, including an alternate venue for home matches. Quite right that Australia Cup runner up gets first shot at spot as it was the qualifying comp.
