And now for some inferred ice-crystal impressions... from perhaps a crisp winter morning roughly 295 million years ago (Usclas Formation, Massif Central, France). Published in doi.org/10.1130/G49011… #paleoweather #lagerstätte #scicomm #ice

@blepharopsis Aha-- like being finger-printed. All you need is a wee bit of dust.

Raindrop impressions-- a light sprinkling from perhaps a Tuesday afternoon, some 300 million years ago, give or take. From the Maroon loessite, Colorado. #loess #dust #raindrop #paleoweather

@Astro_Aure The sediment was once dust (loess)-- powder-like. So it can preserve fine detail. In this aspect, it is similar to volcanic ash. Over millions of years, and burial, it converted to siltstone, but held the imprints.

@LSoreghan Wow 🤯 How are raindrops printed in fossils like that ?!
English

Français

@LSoreghan This is so cool!! Have people compared the drop size distributions from evidence like this to modern records?!
