I've had years of my life without playing any Sonic games yet I was still consuming TV Shows, comics and lots of other non-game media.
So this guy is right. You absolutely can be a fan of the series without playing the games

Something being "canon" doesn't mean it has direct, linear, and relevant influence to previous and future stories
The REAL definition (outside of unrelated legal context) is just the opposite of bootleg/fan-work

What is and isn’t canon shouldn’t matter tbh. If you enjoy a piece of media and it’s canon to you, then it’s canon to you. In the end it’s all good stuff and like Chris said, shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the stories!

After the release of Shadow Generations....yeah. The series will be fine.
As for mechanically and gameplaywise? Once again, because of Shadow Gens, yeah. It's gonna be alright. The series is NEVER gonna totally satisfy me anyways, not after I was exposed to SRB2
