I don't want to hurt Marc Soler, that's not my intention.
But today, UAE's tactics reminded me of when a 5-year-old child is deprived of chocolate for a week to encourage a healthy lifestyle, the chocolate is hidden away in the pantry... the child knows he/she shouldn't eat the chocolate, but still sneaks into the pantry every day, eating two bars - and in the end, everyone is surprised that the experiment failed.
That's kind of how I feel about today. In terms of style, Farrapona can be seen as a kind of mini Angliru (or, as Comrade Pelikán said in the movie "The Witness": a bit yellower, more sour, but ours), and seeing how well Almeida did yesterday, one could expect that from now on it would be full-on GC mode.
But no. Not at all.
Of course, there's now a greed involved, an internal goal to make this UAE team numerically the best ever, possibly reaching over 90 wins by the end of the year... But sacrificing the third most crucial mountain stage of a Grand Tour for this is somewhat counterproductive. Joao doesn't have many opportunities left from now on, fewer than perhaps the UAE inner circle thinks... But if that's good for them – who am I to judge?

IF you decide from now on to disqualify someone by this move, cycling is over!! You can start relegate everyone because everyday and in every sprint something like this and even WORST happen and nobody is dsq! 🤡🤡👎
Rui, you are the winner ❤️
The topos of the national hero and its connection to cycling - by Antonio Morgado's example.
This is a totally ancient concept, traceable back to centuries and millennia, and it primarily appeared in historical contexts at the beginning, on the stage of victors of wars, military leaders, and outstanding national leaders, who quickly became legends within their own environments, this folk canon first remained in oral form, then in written form. Then these heroics spread further in macro and micro-contexts, across various fields, in audiovisual form. This was also true for sports, where these national heroes first appeared in the most popular sports, as uniformed, adored figures, but later, over time, this gradually spread to all sports. And although the term may have become clichéd by now, there are still periods and events that produce new heroes for nations.
I don't know where Antonio Morgado stands in the heart and mind of the Portuguese nation at 21 years of age, but after today, when the promise rose to stardom and officially became a local legend, I think this level is very high. Competing on home turf (almost literally, since he grew up an hour from here, this is his serious home race), racing for the world's best team, attacking uncompromisingly, in a Millennium Falcon-style launch, while thousands of people cheers for him in complete ecstasy... It's an otherworldly feeling, it gives any rider at least 30 watts. And today, Tonio not only demonstrated the liberating effect of the home court but also showed that he is much more versatile than a rider who only thrives in small group sprints. This was his first solo victory, a 20+ kilometer solo where there was actually a chance for others to chase behind him - and they actually did it fairly well on the last 10k. It wasn't a clear-cut race in that sense, but made his way tactically well.
I will be very curious to see if he can/will transfer this one-day race form to stage races as well. In fact: I don't know if UAE would want to transfer this in 2025, as they have already found in him a worthy, (future) upgraded successor to Marc Hirschi on one-day races. But I believe that today is not about that, but rather about a much bigger, much grander factor that goes beyond cycling - the definitive and irreversible coming together of Antonio Morgado and the Portuguese people in Figueira da Foz.
