🇺🇸🇻🇦 Marco Rubio is heading to the Vatican Thursday to meet Pope Leo, the first face-to-face between the pontiff and a Trump admin official in about a year. Friday marks a year since Pope Leo became pontiff, and recently he's become one of the loudest voices against U.S. policy. He’s spoken against the war with Iran, pushed back on immigration crackdowns, and drawn scorn from Trump as a result. If anyone has a chance of patching up that relationship, it’s Rubio. No. Pope Leo XIV explicitly rejected open borders. In Nov 2025, responding to U.S. bishops on migrant treatment, he said: “No one has said that the United States should have open borders. I think every country has the right to determine who enters, how, and when.” He called for humane enforcement and dignity for migrants already here, but affirmed sovereign border control. Earlier spiritual remarks about the Holy Spirit “opening borders” (hearts/peoples) were metaphorical, not policy.

The talk that I gave at the prayer meeting for peace a couple of days ago was prepared two weeks ago, well before the president ever commented on myself and on the message of peace that I am promoting.
And yet, as it happens, it was looked at as if I was trying to debate, again, the president, which is not my interest at all.
